Yes, I used to use the Channel mixer as well, but CS3 has built in B&W with several presets that represent the use of filters in the film days - without losing light during exposure, of course. I now only carry two filters with me - CPL and ND. Here's the B&W pane with and without the pull-down.
It really looks nice, kind of like the Imaging factory plugins for B&W conversion.

Were you at the bar during happy hour just before you took this shot? Man, that's one crooked horizon ;)
In your first pic - there seems to be some softness in the people at the bottom of the shot. Would that be motion blur?

hi Guys, just bought the mighty Sigma 10-20. Please tell from your experience at witch apperture you can get the best sharpness. Also add your thoughts what level of sharpness is at f/4.0 and at f/11 and beyond? how the lens perform at 20mm as compared with the 10 mm mark? in other words what is the best option to get a sharpest landscape photo out of this lens!!!! your answers will be Highly appreciated. thanks!!!

I've found that f/7.1 is the sharpest aperture for 10mm shots. I rarely shoot 20mm so can't help you there. For landscapes, use f/11-f/13 to get everything in focus, and focus just before infinity.

Got mine today - didn't do much with it, other than test the lens. Am going out tomorrow aft to run it through it's paces.
Focus seems to be spot on - did the ol' newsprint test with a tripod and mirror lockup. No problems there.
Distortion is noticable, but I think managable - will just have to be careful about certain shaped objects on the edges of the frame.
I did notice some fairly significant CA (well, significant at 100% crops) at 10 mm with the aperture wide open. I stopped it down to about 7 and the CA went away. No noticable CA at 14 mm or above with the lens wide open either (didn't test 12 mm).
So far I'm pretty happy with the lens - hopefully the light is good enough tomorrow to really see what it can do.

The 10-20 isn't EF-S. It has a smaller image circle, but it will still mount. You can crop out the black edges if you take a 15mm shot with a 5d and have an extremely wide 7-8mp shot still. I think anything down to 13mm is usable on a 1D. I plan on using my 10-20 with my 35mm camera this fall.
Exactly, It is my understanding that only Canon uses the EF-S, Electronic Focus - Short back focus.
Sigma uses the DC designation, meaning it cropped for 1.5x and 1.6x cameras, for "optimum" performance. :)

Correct. Any other EOS-mount lenses made by third-parties will *fit* any EOS cameras, but they may have a black ring around the edge.
restedtraveller, what kind of polarizer are you using for those shots? I want to get one but I want to make sure the effect is even.

I use Cokin P system for filter holding. it's simply great thing once you know
how to handle it. you basically buy the metal ring for every lens size filter
i have 2 - 77 and 67 mm. and then attach a plastic holder which could hold
up to 3 square filters. they are very inexpensive if to compare to single glass
filters but they do the job. may be there is a set-back in terms of the best
possible quality, i do not know, but for me this is the thing.
I usually use ND4 and gradient ND filters but there are many more of them
to experiment.

Cassie, thank you, you are right. I have it hanging in several places, including my house, my secretaries office, (at her request) and one of my associates house. Its a landmark lighthouse in Palos Verdes, California, about 10 minutes from where I live.
Zilly, you are correct also. I did do some paining with light. If recall, I painted with white light and boosted the saturation selectively.
NYY, you are also correct on both accounts. It is an HDR image to start with, and even then the rocks were a little dark, and I had to do a little paining with light. The rocks and water are a little over sharpened. I corrected that some on the printed image.
This is the only 30X20 inch print I have done, and looks pretty decent.

This is the only 30X20 inch print I have done, and looks pretty decent.
thanks for the positive feedback. The 10-20 is really a great lens.
Howdy Neighbor! I'm in San Pedro :)
I have the 10-20 coming tomorrow. I'm pretty excited. I keep checking UPS's website to see if the shipping/delivery has been updated.

Hi TDP! San Pedro is a cool place. I had some good Italian food there a while back. Was in a restaurant which could have been straight out of Supranos. I think you will like this lens a lot. Not just for landscape, but also in tight quarters.

Yep, they are both HDR's. The first one sort of had to in order to get anything other than the sun exposed correctly. The second one could have been done with a single exposure without any issues though.

rparchen - Hey, great minds think alike. I'm sure many folks have the same location shots as I have your second shot too. Hana is the wet area of the island so weather is an issue. I'm not having luck with PSCS3's HDR so I will have to try Photomatrix. You seem to have a great handle on your HDRs; care to share your bracketing levels? Thanks!

I used five images, spaced from -2 to +2, and merged them with photomatix. It all depends on the metering of the scene though. I could have easily used a few extra stops to prevent the sun from blowing out in the first pic. I know the words natural and HDR don't generally appear in the same sentence but keeping the sun blown was how I remember the scene and it looks more natural to me.
But back to how cool this lens is, here is another shot overlooking a small village on the way to Hana.

Just a quick snap at 20mm. I've found that my lens is tack sharp anywhere below infinity. But at and around infinity it just gets incredibly soft. Would calibration solve that problem?

Jiggy, it kinda changes a bit with the tone mapping and the merge for HDR, but I used a CPL for that photo. I would use a CPL (expensive one at that for 77mm) every time I shoot outside on a sunny day. It looks fine at 10mm. What did you want to know?

I read in a book that UW lenses may show too much color change from one part of the sky to another due to the large amount of sky they capture.
I'm interested in buying this lens for landscape photography, and would like to retain the blue skies and green foliage that you only get with CPLs!

I do notice that with the CPL, the sky is not darkened evenly throughout. There will be spots that look like the CPL did not darken, but it can be due to my relative angle to the sun. I know with a CPL ideal angle is 90 degrees.
Also, on a crop cam your apparent FOV is longer of course, so it may not be bad as what your book said. 10mm is like a 17mm FOV.
JiggyNS
23rd of August 2007 (Thu), 17:10
... yea, the angle of camera view to the sun will modify the CPL effect
so is this problem bad enough for you to take off the CPL or no?
00silvergt
23rd of August 2007 (Thu), 17:34
Well it makes the sky look uneven in color. PP can probably fix it, but I get part of the sky that deep dark blue and spots the regular color. It may be my CPL, it is a decent one, nothing very fancy though. Hoya 77mm CPL.

I can totally be wrong, and I'll deserve it because you did direct that question to Tee Why, but to take a shot at it, I'd say because the Tokina is a Fisheye lens and the Sigma is not, but a UWA. Optically, they are different even though their focal lengths are similar. That or the 'Flux Capacitor' of the Sigma was not 'fluxing'? ;)

Is it normal for this lens to be a bit soft on the corners at 10mm on a cropped camera (like an XT)? Maybe when fully open?
Here is a crop of an image i got from a seller and I can't tell if its a soft copy of the lens or maybe there's a smudge on the lens or what...

As for the fisheey vs wigma thing. A fisheye in order to give a wider field of view of 180 degrees diagonally, they do not correct for the distortion, so the image is curved.
A rectilinear lens like the Sigma corrects for the distortion to a large degree at the cost of less wide field of view.
Just gotta pick what works for you. Generally a rectilinear lenses tend to be more versatile as fisheye lenses are too fishy at times and are more of a trick shot lens you use to get one fishy shot to stand out. I wouldn't do landscapes with them for this reason.

I ordered canon with about $640 when the codes were working, very long time ago, first order i did from B&H in the past and the lens was with another lenses i've ordered that time so maybe the shipping for it was less then a lens itself.
Now we don't know how much the budget to buy one of those UWA lenses so we can advice which one to go with, even Sigma 12-24 or Tokina 12-24 i heard they are great [I have Sigma 12-24 as my second lens after Sigma 70-300 and my kit lens in the past including sigma 17-35 which i sold because i got 16-35L].
