They look nice, but maybe a little overexposed, try and darked the sky and little, and up the contrast a little, then you shall have a even nicer shot!
Will try that and see if I can improve them .... ;)

Thanks guys. This lens has really open the flood gates in terms of perspectives. I dunno. If you can visualize a super wide angle shot than its a great lens to use.

Ive always had optimism towards the EX lens. I always thought the EX was no different to a non EX (say Sigma 17-70mm). But I am starting to realize the differences. The HSM focus is super quick and quiet. But my most important shock is the optical power of the glass...
The images are sharper on this lens over my Sigma 17-70mm. I can tell the difference right away. I never have to add any sharpening. Truly amazing. I wish my Sigma 17-70mm was an EX version with HSM. I wish Sigma made a Sigma 17-70mm EX version.

I can't believe how sharp this lens is. I almost went with the canon (+250 if you include a hood). I am soooo happy that I got the Sig.
For alot less money I got great optics, great build quality, a hood & nice case. All these pics are awesome. I'm glad I cheaped out with this one. I haven't used the canon, but can't see how it's worth 250 more than this lens. Alot of the canon owners tend to trash this lens. I can't see how.
My reasoning for getting the Sig was this was going to be a novelty lens & I would only use it from time to time. After giving it a good test drive today, it's going to be hard to take it off my camera.
keep the pics coming

Well I got mine a couple of days ago and really like the lens and the options it gives me. Here's a shot from this evening...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e316/GeeJayW/Landscapes/CheshireRainSmall.jpg
I am still uncertain about the sharpness. It seems soft to me, unless I'm missing something. This is a 100% Crop. I know this is near the edge of the frame, but 125th at f8...
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e316/GeeJayW/Landscapes/IMG_0493100crop.jpg
Maybe I'm expecting too much. But I would appreciate any input.
I want to be able to bring an ultra-wide lens with me to the Grand Canyon in a few weeks time, so if I need to change this lens for another it may not be too late..
Cheers!

First off, nice shot.
The 100% crop does look a little soft but is f/8 a small enough aperture to get such a large foreground/background differential in complete focus?? I suspect that stopping down a couple more would further increase your DoF and allow the far trees to be sharp along with very near the foreground tree on the left. I don't have this lens (yet) so just guessing here.
Geejay
3rd of March 2008 (Mon), 15:04
Thanks for the compliments on the overall shot.
I guess I could have tried f11, f16 is probably getting on the small side and might start introducing edge effects. The trees in the crop were at least 400 yrds from the camera. I guess I expected that a lens this short would have enough DOF at f8 to cope with that.
To be honest I have no experience of ultra-wide at all and am open to views on whether or not this degree of sharpness/softness is typical for this lens or this lens type...

You won't get a really high quality UV filter for only 30 bucks, and only the high-end ones are worth getting. And then, they're only really essential if you shoot in poor conditions or are prone to getting fingerprints on your front element.
CPLs are nice to have, I like having one for every thread size. Don't use 'em that much, but when I do, I'm glad they're there. Pretty much the only filter effect that you can't simulate in PP.
For me, UV, CPL, ND and GND filters all have an important place in the nature/landscape photographer's bag.

Got mine recently, like many others it suffers from softness around the edges but all in all a great lens.
were those shot with the Mark III? Mind sharing focal length and any post work to remove vignetting?

I Love the way super wide angle distorts everyday objects. Creates this weird sort of photograph.

Hopefully, I will be getting a job (engineering) and I'll have plenty of money for a new lens.

I've only had this lens since yesterday and I cannot begin to tell you how much I love it.
The ultrawide angle is such an amazing perspective
it's perfect for cityscapes and other things, and I'm sure as I use it I'll find more and more applications for it.

You have a ton of good elements in the shot. Unfortunately, because of the limited dynamic range of any given digital exposure, you have to make concessions.
The sky is blown out in parts, and you have various elements that could use more contrast/saturation/etc. By using layers, you can edit a select part of the picture instead of everything at once. This allows you to darken parts of the sky, increase saturation on the graffiti, and play with the saturation without affecting the whole image.
It takes some getting used to, but layers are very powerful.

That was from Q1 (http://www.q1.com.au/home.html) on the Gold Coast (Queensland) Australia. We popped down there for an excursion with uni earlier in the week. :)
They say its the 20th tallest building in the world, but that is only thanks to its 10+ floors of spike that no one can get up or in to.
Edit: and dont mind the dodgy white balance (darn tinted glass) but here is another one showing more of the coral sea to the east.

No, you simulate the effect of a TS lens in ways.
The way I do it is create a reflected (cylindrical) gradient in quick mask mode, exit quick mask mode, and run a lens blur on the selection. There are other ways to do it too.
Simple :D.

And a couple more.
The seaside one isnt particularly good, but the reason I posted it is because of the interesting effect you can get with this lens. The rocks on the right are maybe 4 inches high, and 6-8 inches on the left. The camera was just about sitting on the sand, making the rocks look large-ish, particularly those on the left. I think the sky is having an impact on the perception of the scale.
