How do you get so just the lighthouse is lit? I have no experience with a flash as I'm too tight to go and buy one , but one would presume that when the flash is fired, the ground in front of the flash would be lit too? Or is that why you position the flash at an angle?

Just a quick question - will a standard hoya circular polariser be ok with this lens or do I need to pay a bit more and get the professional version? Seen the standard version for £24 on Ebay and don't really want to pay much more than that.

i think the reason there was not much light on the ground is that its slightly under-exposed(flash) and since the lighthouse is white in colour it took less power to light it up where as the ground is darker in colour.. i tried 3 different angles - right/left but straight on(lighthouse) seemed to work best!
here it is with 2-stops added(DPP).. you can see the ground is exposed well(which was under before) but the lighthouse is now over-exposed

It will work on an XTi as that is not a full frame camera, it won't fit on full frame cameras like the 5D.

Actually...it does fit on a 5d. Same mount as a standard ef lens, it's just that the lens was designed around the smaller sensor, so it vignettes pretty bad up to about 13-14mm.

The EF-S ones push in further, so I wouldn't suggest mounting Canon's 10-22, but you could mount the Sigma without worry.. In fact I think this thread (maybe another) has pictures taken with a 5D...

FYI. I'm sure that only Canon make true 'EF-S' Lenses, all third party 'digital' (Sigma DC and whatever Tokina and Tamron call theirs) designated lenses can be use on full frame.

Sigma DC lenses don't protrude as much at the back as Canon EF-S lenses, so probably don't hit the mirror on a full frame camera. I've used my 18-125mm on a 5D without harming the camera.
However, the DC lenses make a smaller image circle than full frame lenses, so there can be severe vignetting, especially with wide angle.
Essentially by optimising the optical design for smaller sensor coverage, the overall lens can be made smaller and lighter (and cheaper too I guess).
The other thing I notice with Canon EF-S lenses is that they have a rubber seal on the back that sits in a recess in the body mount. So maybe genuine Canon lenses are better at keeping dust out?

Though saying that, it could be my user error.
Whats the best F stop and settings to use?
I find mine to be sharpest around f5.6 or f8.
In good light and the right subject, flat out is OK, but I also feel that softness can be an issue.
It seems to depend a lot on composition and how you're filling the space. Especially at the 10mm end. On a crop body, it's easy to think of the lens as a 16-32mm, but it isn't. It's still 10-20mm. I'm old enough to remember when 20mm was thought of as v-e-r-y w-i-d-e.. 10mm was almost unheard of without big distortions at the extremes, even with careful use.
I've had mine about 3-months now and to be honest, I'm still trying to understand how to get the best out of it. I did some standard 'brick wall' shots when I first got it and know that the lens is sharp enough. If you've not done this with your lens, give it a try.
Keep shooting and learning.
Cheers!

How do you test your Sigma 10-20mm? I was reading that you can shoot a brick wall, but what do you look for in the shot? edges/centre sharpness?
What about f-stops? is f5.6 and f8 the best stops to go to on both 10mm and 20 mm occasions? I was told that 3 stops above the min f-stop of the focal length is best, but if someone could enlighten a newbie that would be great :)

It's at its sharpest around f/5.6-f/8 indeed. You could do some boring tripod-remote-shutter-release-brick-wall-test-shots, or you could just go out with it and have fun.

The thing about the brick wall test is that you can check for focus, distortion and vignetting performance all at the same time. With a lens as wide as this one, you have to be careful to get the lens and the wall parallel (vertical and horizontal) otherwise perspective distortion becomes quite pronounced.
This is all quite dull of course, I agree it's much moore fun to go and shoot some real photos. :)
Cheers!

...but then again if you're oblivious to what lens you have you'll never know whether your lens is a sharp one or not. I was told that Sigma have poor QC with their lenses...not sure whether it applies with the Sigma though.
@sjlund, that is such a hot capture. It's one of those places where you'd never think would look nice, but you certainly gave that scene justice mate, well done.

After more that a year of lusting for this lens, I finally purchased one. I got it on Amazon through 47th street photo so that I could get the 4 year warranty.
This has been my "next-lens-to-get" for such a long time, and I am thrilled that it will be at my doorstep sometime this coming week (hopefully). And the best news of all is that I didn't have to sell my 70-200mm f4L to finance this one. I finally got a job that pays well enough for me to spend my money stupidly again (I'm a poor college student).

i also read that there were 2 versions of the sig1020, one with serial number 102, and a newer release with serial number starting at 103, which addressed many problems.
I also read quite a few reviews that described how people would have to send the lens to sigma to have it corrected a few times before acceptable. I would have to be involved in that sort of process... any light to shine on this? Perhaps it's been addressed already, since many of these posts with complaints are from pre-2006, to right when the 30d came out.
I just picked mine up used couple days ago....found this post and noticed mine is serial number 101......I guess i need to download the pics I took and see how they look. I'm too interested in the process mentioned here to get it corrected...especially if its not under warranty...

You all got me interested so I checked and mine begins with 214. I just purchased it from Amazon here in the US a couple weeks back.
BTW, Tony Rage, I just LOVE that cityscape. I really enjoy those sorts of photos and never tire of seeing them. I appreciate the the technical side of the car pics, but next to listening to Johnny Miller discuss "grain" and listening to folks tell me about planes, cars are kinda next for me...and despite that I really LIKE your picture. Did you use an external light source to help? Or was it just a flash?

Thank you very much for the nice comments!, you have no Idea how many times I sat at the vry same spot triying to get that photo of downtown orlando, I must have like 5 from different ocations. It wasnt until that day that I have read about long exposures and have just bought my S10-20 and gave it a shot... the cityscape was shot at 15 secs if I remember correctly, also the picture of the evo was shot at eather 10 or 15 secs as well, I had an external cheap wireless flash but I dont think I used flash at all in that picture, only the light from a lamp on the side of the building above the car.

Yeah, I know the cast is there. And no not LR but CS3. I am just getting a feel for how PS works. I tried to get it out last night but only got to a reasonable, well, reasonable at 2AM, kinda level.
One thing though is the lambient light itself had an amber/yellowish cast to it yesterday afternoon. It was truly erie...still I am gonna learn how to get that cast out...or die trying!! :) Any suggestions beyond playing with the levels would be appreciated.
BTW, I think what I shudda done was use a bit of fill flash to help balance the lighting...din't wanna spook the leetle pony though as it was so friendly and simply wanted to come over and get petted... :)

How well do you think this lens would perform for photography of bmx/skateboarding in comparison to a fisheye lens?
brecklundin

How well do you think this lens would perform for photography of bmx/skateboarding in comparison to a fisheye lens?
I am sure someone with more experience can come to correct any mistatement here but your question is an apples to oranges comparison. A fisheye is designed to induce distortion and these Ulta Wide Angle (UWA) lenses are made with the primatry purpose of getting as much of a scene into the picture as possible. There is/"can be" some distortion but nothing such as you would get from a fisheye lens.
Personally I think if the idea is to get a fuller subject from close range to to get a larger scene when your other lenses simply do not have the field of view needed, then something like a Sigma 10-20mm or the Canon 10-22mm are the ticket. If you want to create a more pronounced "fisheye" style distortion then these are not the right lens and a single purpose fisheye is the ticket.
nyy
29th of June 2008 (Sun), 20:04
I don't think you'll get the kind of distortion you would look for in a BMX shot from this lens.
deci
29th of June 2008 (Sun), 20:27
I have to agree with brecklundin here, I got this lens back at Christmas time thinking I'd get at least a bit of the 'fisheye' effect. You do, but only a little and then only if close to the MFD.
As I don't generally do anything that needs less than a 50mm lens, this must be my most underused lens at the moment. If I start shooting the human animal, that may change, but for now, it was a wasted few hundred quid.:(

My first Sigma 10-20 was defective (bad HSM motor). Gave it back to B&H and got a second one today.
Certainly mechanically better, no problem with HSM. Optics look pretty good, I think - just a few test shots hand held -- will do more definitive test with tripod over the weekend. Please take a look and tell me what you think:

I live on the 40th floor of a building in Midtown Manhattan:

But besides that, do you think this 10-20mm copy looks OK?
Thanks,

You lucky sun of a gun...congrats on that view. And thanks for the additional picture.
As to the new copy of the lens. I viewed all the images in your gallery and they seem sharp and clear. To my eye they look dead solid perfect. Mind I am no expert but I catch patterns and irregularities pretty easily and I see nothing which stands out. Just nice clean images.
Bummer about the HSM motor. But I suppose that sort of thing does happen as with other devices these days. At least it was a fast fix... :)

I'm not a total pixel-peeper, but I always want to make sure my copy is comparable with other good copies out there - especially in lieu of Sigma's reputation for quality control. I had a bad copy of the 18-200 OS before I got a good one. Thanks for checking them out...
Here's another pic of my view:

Probably already asked, but any shots of this on a 1.3 body?

Sorry this is not from a 1.3 body, just a 40d but I took it the other day and just got around to looking at it. It's not a great setting but the tree is a really old Cypress in our "Old Downtown" section. I just have always liked it.

Nice tree, and nice pic! (though I would get rid of those telephone lines in the background).
