skanter...I'm learning a bit more every day...I think I can try that. It's just a rotten location to get a pic. And trust me this is it's "good side" the background and other junk seen from any of the other directions is worse. ;)

Glad ya liked the tree. Amazingly enough the name of the street where the tree is located is, are ya ready, Cypress...see, we are not a creative people nor are we crafty, but we try hard. ;)

EDIT: Well, geeze, PS is cool...what a cleaner image!! thanks for the suggestion.

I plan to test my 10-20 this weekend. Any suggestions? I was thinking a close brick wall at different apertures (open, f8, f11) at 10mm, 15mm, 20mm - then a far subject at same apertures.

Any other ideas?

Did some more shooting with lens on the street, got mixed results. I think the lens is fine, but I am unfamiliar with shooting with a SWA. A few questions:

I usually shoot with one-shot AF (350D), not sure if it matters. I assume everyting is in focus past about three feet as there is huge DOF with this lens. Does it matter what one focuses on unless close? Some of my shots of far-away scenes seem very soft. Shooting close subjects seem quite sharp. Does it matter much if one shoots at f8 or smaller?

Exposures often are over-exposed, as lens is taking in so much and I usually use small center for exposing. I assume i should use another exposure mode with this wide lens - what do you 10-20 users usually use? With so much in the FOV, what do you expose for - the brightest part?

I'll probably figure this all out with experimentation - this is an exciting lens!

Also, besides just shooting, what is a definitive test for the lens...?

Thanks in advance for replies...

Got my copy on Tuesday. I really like it but can't decide if its sharp as I guess I'm just not used to such a wide angle lens. Heres one of the shots I've taken since getting it for your opinions. I know its not a 100% crop but my PS skills don't stretch that far yet unfortunately.

Corners seem soft when shooting far away subjects, sharp when subjects are closer. Does this seem normal? Even the center seems much softer when shooting subjects that are further away...

You need flickr pro to see the original size.

Otherwise, to post the largest image you can, right click on the image and choose "copy image location" and paste it here.

Thanks in advance for replies...

I have switched from evaluative metering to spot and switch between One Shot and AI Servo mode. I have a 40d so I am not sure what other bodies have as the next setting but I set C.nFIII: Auto Focus/Drive~"AF Mode selection method" to Multi-controller direct. This has really helped me in my image captures. but like I said this is my first DSLR and first SLR in over 30yrs so I have no clue what preceding model menu systems and settings might be...

Personally I do not think there are definitive tests for a lens beyond testing for AF functioning properly and front/back focusing. Otherwise, check for internal element goobers and then shoot stuff.

I have posted this before, I have discovered if I pic on lens and make myself use only that lens that day, it seems to be like tossing the kid in the deep end to teach him/her to swim...if the bubbles stop coming up then, well, it was just not the right copy so get another one. :p

Where do you buy yours?

I bought my ROR from Don's Camera online (http://www.donscamera.com/ROR-Residual-Oil-Remover-Lens-Cleaner-2-ounce-p/vv-ror2.htm), it was reasonable for a 2oz bottle and I had it in 2 or was it 3 days? I think it was 2-days after I ordered. I even filled my Targus lens brush & spritzer with some of the ROR so I always have it at the ready. And it takes VERY LITTLE, for smaller lenses just a quick short *poof* of the spray on the cloth then gently cleaning goes a long way.

BTW, a nice side use is I got all the body oils out of my laptop mouse pad and palm rest and also the keyboard. Plus the display looks as clear as it did new.

Interesting, that many do not use AF. If one has a subject with a lot of depth (like a landscape), where do you focus - in the middle?

I'm used to using center-point AF and exposure - not good with this lens.

I'm finding that using center for exposure doesn't work well with this lens - too much bright (blown out) sky in many pics. What strategy do you use for getting a good exposure with SWA?

Here is a pic I posted earlier (the one I yanked out the power/phone lines from...) http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=5839724&postcount=1208

That was full sun, hazy day, spot metering, full manual mode and AF as i described earlier. It took me a while to get the hang of not blowing out the sky on every single goll-dern'd shot but I am much better at it. Basically I stop down and don't completely depend on the meter, more by feel now. I wish I had the vocabulary and experience to explain my process, but I am simply not at that level yet. I can say that I am working off of the blown photo's in the past and simply not using the same settings. This is getting me much improved results.

BTW, neither pic used a CPL and both are on the 10-20mm...

Here is another pic I took in the same session:

Have you really looked at the distance indicator? Like most it goes from minimum focussing distance, in this case 0.8 ft to 3 ft along most of it's travel then from 3 ft to infinity is a very tiny movement and easy to misread.

How are the images from the lens? If they are good then don't worry. Your question prompted me to look at the distance indicator on mine for the very first time. I doubt I'll look at it again as it produces very nice images.

I've looked at the distance indicator very closely. It is totally incorrect. I focus on a distant object, it reads UNDER 3 feet. Sometimes it doesn't move at all when I change distances. My other Sigma lens (18-200 OS) reads the distance accurately every time.

As far as images go, I'm not sure about focus. I've taken lots of test images, most seem in focus, but with a huge DOF that is natural. I certainly don't want a lens that has a defective AF mechanism, or is not interfacing with my camera correctly.

If you could look at it the indicator again, I'd appreciate your telling me if it seems to accurately indicate the distance, taking into account the small range between 3 feet and infinity.

Thanks...

I can't really tell the difference between 5 feet and 20 feet with mine, the movement is very small. Under 3 feet it does seem fairly dead on but over 3 feet is anyone's guess really.

there should be tiny movements between 3' to infinity because that area of the scale represents a HUGE range. But still if you are using spot metering and point at something a couple hunder feet away I would hope it goes to infinity.

Here is a test you might try to see if the scale is off and the lens is still focusing or the whole thing is foobar'd...on a very distant subject that should be in the infinity range of the lens, run a test shot with AF on then turn it off and manually focus on the same target but crank the focus to infinity...see if that makes a difference in the distant object.

I have read many lenses from many different mfg's can have probs so it's not unreasonable. Still one should expect perfect functioning from a new item.

Funny, I just did the exact same test as you suggested - with weird results.

I AF on a building a few hundred yards away (which read a little over 3 ft). Then took off AF, , manually set to infinity and took the same shot (3X each).

The AF shots were in focus, the infinity shots were out of focus.

Unless I'm missing something, this lens is having focusing problems - manual and AF!

I tried it on a building a mile away -- same results!

I might just be being a bit paranoid. Some research shows that SWAs do not always display accurate distance readings.

Could you look at yours and see if you get similar inaccurate readings?

unless it interferes with the actual focusing, Forget about it :D, i have a sigma thats soft at 2.8( and i do mean SOFT) but a killer at 4.5, and i still use as my walk around lens.

and the af meter could be stuck, thats it. if you see the focus actually moving then everything is fine.

Ps: try putting it on manual and moving the focus ring two and fro very fast. see if it moves. the af meter i mean.

Moves fine in manual (it looks like the "meter" is actually one of the lens elements moving, so I'm not sure it could be stuck. Then again, I know little about what's inside this thing.)

I guess I can accept that the indicator is not accurate, if others' copies do the same thing. If not, I may bring it back to B&H and have them take a look -- I live only a few blocks away.

Brought Sigma back, compared to their demo copy. Its AF seemed to be a bit more accurate, but still was off intermittently. B&H rep apologized, said I got two lemons.

Took home a Canon 10-22mm and did some comparison tests, open, f8 and f11 at 10mm and 20mm. Canon's AF meter was always exact, AF is much faster and quieter. !00% crops show Canon sharper, especially in corners (although this might have to do with Sigma copy's AF problem.) Canon had better contrast and color. However, seemed to be a bit inferior in build quality. It's lighter, which is an advantage.

My brother, who is paying for half of the lens in return for my help on a interior shoot of his house (for which SWA is needed), very generously said he would make up the difference between the Sigma and the Canon, so that I am basically getting the Canon for $250 plus some work.

The big difference between the two lenses, for me, is that the Canon WORKS with my, 350D, the two Sigmas did not. I can't keep trying new copies of sigmas (B&H won't let me) For the same price, it makes sense for me to go with the Canon. I guess I can't post pics here anymore...:(

hey, it's just great ya got something that works for you!! And a bummer there were two bad Sigma's in succession. I wonder though, if these thngs do run in batches and it's possible for some simple production issue to cause some batches to be consistenly flaky.

No matter now ya can have some fun!!

...well, not quite. The deal is that I have to send him the lens (Long Island), then instruct him over the phone how to shoot interiors with it and an external flash (320EX). After he gets his shots, he sends the lens back to me.

I might not get the lens back until the end of the summer...

downfall:

those are super nice! I love how the first one looks almost too perfect. To be honest it brings to mind some sort of custom cake decorations a friend of ours does as a business. She makes some things that like just so real. I know that is a weird connection but the clean lines of the first photo really do bring it to my mind.

And too funny about laying out in the sun on your back in office attire at the beach around noon. Love that sort of dedication! :)

hahahahahaa....amen brother...I KNOW the feeling all too well. I am just getting back into the SLR end of things after being away for a good 30-yr break and have just used a Sony DSC-S70 over the past 8-9yrs. But I refuse to do it any way but manual and to re-learn all my f/stops & expousre rules. But that good photo stands out so much when you finally get one. Like I wrote I really like that first one, it's just so clean and crisp. The other does not "blow my skirt up", still the sky came out fantastic to my eyes.

I'm beginning to think my new copy is defective as well!

The AF distance indicator is rarely correct. When I AF on a distant object, it says 3 feet. Often the distance indicated is incorrect. Am I missing something, or is this another defective HSM???

neat Bioshock...kinda surreal...that looks like it was a fairly long exposure. About how long? I love the way the village lights illuminate the sheer rock wall on the right...and is that a waterfall in there too?

Actually all of the shots shown on this page are super looking to me...it really is such a fun lens. I have to be in Santa Barbara all day on Friday and am hoping to get some time to take pics...

Thanks for the complements. This one actually isn't HDR. This is an shutter speed of 34 sec at ISO 1600. I did use Lightroom 2.0 to darken the town lights exposure a little so that kinda makes it look like an HDR.

To see full meta data you can go here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevinmiller/2675784463/meta/

It was taken from my hotel room in Lauterbrunnen Switzerland. Gotta love waking up to this view.

I do have some HDR pics of the area as well so maybe I'll post some of those. :-D

The Sigma was not just having problems with infinity; when i focused 10 feet away, it would read 1 foot. When I focused on a far-away subject, it would read under 3 feet. I returned it, got a Canon 10-22, it reads accurately what I focus on and I don't have to worry if I'm getting inaccurate AF.

You might like to try purchasing a circular polarizer filter, as it will cut down on the glare of the water and expose the rocks beneath the water a little more if used correctly.

prodigal- awesome photos man... 1 question, whered you learn your pp?

Thanks!
I am mainly self taught when it comes to PP and I am sure as you can tell from some of my photos I go from a dark style to a stark style. I am influenced by what I see here and in various places around the web and from my cousin (www.distortedperspective.com). I do all my PP in Lightroom, which I find to be an amazing program. I download and apply presets, but I don't stop there. I tweak the settings to fit the image in my mind. For me, its trial and error when editing my images. I am glad you like the result!

Everything you see there (aside from the watermark) was done in LR. Its been a while since I have printed a photo (my printer is in storage at the moment), but from past experience it looks pretty good. I will have to do another print test just to double check. With the student discount, lightroom is pretty cheap!

What a great image! Is that a row of pews, like those you see in a church?

BobbyT

Yes that is correct sir. This was in the prison chapel, or what remains of it. I had a friend help me light paint the area with 2 LED flashlights to get the blueish hue. And the light in the window is from the outdoor lights.

How nice of you to share how you went about taking the photo. Thanks! I think you should print that photo.

Oh no problem. I had to have help with the light painting. There was only so far I could move with the shutter release cable in hand.

I will be ordering a large print of it for the winter. The colors will be nice to see when everything is gray outside.

Well I got my lens a little over a week ago, I LOVE IT!! Most fun I've had with photography in a while. The colors are amazing!

This one is JPG shot with "landscape" picture styles. (I know it's not level)

This is my first HDR attempt using photomatix. My monitor isn't calibrated so I don't know how good it looks.

Question: Does this thing need SLIM filters? I'm looking to buy a C-PL and would rather get a cheap one if vingetting is not an issue.

Yes it does need a slim frame at 10mm and it's never a good idea to buy cheap filters anyway as you may as well smear grease on your lens.
