I'm wondering if the AE-1 is the same camera, or at least uses the same lenses, as the AE Automatic (which was Canon's first camera with an auto exposure setting). I have the AE Automatic, and can't figure out what size filters thread is on its 50mm 1:1.8 Normal lens. I was hoping to use that lens with a macro coupler on the G3 52mm lens adapter. The smallest thread I could find on a macro coupler was 49mm, and that's too big.
Do you have a similar lens and know the filter size?

Sheri

Sheri, is your FD 50mm f1.8 lens a "breechlock" (with the silver mounting ring) or "bayonet" (with the small lens release button near the base)? Both lenses were still available as the AE bodies were first introduced.
If it's breechlock, it uses 55mm filters.
If it's bayonet, it uses 52mm filters.

Hi Karl. Mine is not an FD lens, it says EX. It doesn't have a bayonet or mounting ring. It screws directly into the camera body. The filter size is smaller than 49 for sure. I also have a 35mm wide angle and 120mm telephoto lens for this camera. In truth, my SLR body is a "Bell and Howell Auto 35 Reflex". But the body and the lenses are made by Canon. It came out in the early 70s.

I guess I'm mistaken about it being equivalent to a Canon "AE Automatic". It seems it was "EX Automatic".
Oh well.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I thought Bell and Howell cameras were made by Pentax, such as the Spotmatic series of cameras. You learn something new everyday! :)

Forget it. I'm confusing Bell and Howell with Honeywell! :)

Wow, you have an EX auto!!! I havent seen one of those in a while. As far as I know, that was a bare bones SLR. That is a different type of lens.
I have the FD 50mm 1.4 lens and a FD 50mm 1.8. they both use the 52mm filter. The most obvious note here is the make, FD or EF lens.
The new Canon rebels use the EF lens.
I too had a similar issue with deciding a good adapter. I went with the 58mm canon adapter, just because i had more filters for it.
Yes there were two type of models the metal ring(original silver) and the plastice type.
Some books that might help you out with more info are:
Lens Work
The canon guide to interchangeable lenses
and
The Kodak Workshop series
Using Filters
Sorry i couldnt be much more help ,but from experience 50mm uses a 52mm filter.i would like to see your upcoming filter work.
cheers!!!!

Yes, from what I've found seaching the Internet its actually a collectors item now :D

Sounds like you have two excellent candidates for use as macro lenses for your G3. Especially the 1.4. Wow. With your 58mm lens adapter, all you would need is a 58-52 macro coupler such as this one:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh4/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=102220&is=REG
It should work like a fine +25 diopter, but the G3 will have to be zoomed to avoid vignetting.
The coupler I got is 49-52. Now I have a 48-49 step-up ring on order. Should be here by Thursday.

Sheri
