Hi all ,
in the peferences for raw conversion , what is the linear option , how is it different than *normal* and also is it better to have the option *false colour filter * checked or un checked ? thanks.
Ray.

Ray,

The linear option produces a file in which gamma has not been adjusted. It's not exactly correct, but the easiest thing to think of as gamma is brightness. Linear images will look dark and under-exposed. It's a direct reflection of the amount of light hitting the sensor. Curves adjustments are needed to adjust lienar images so that they look normal.

However, they are the closest we can get to the raw image data. With my D30 I used to work exclusively with linear conversions because I felt they gave me the best image quality.

The FCF is usually best left on: it protects against colour fringing of fine objects, like branches against sky. It does add to the conversion time, so I guess if you have a _really_ slow PC, you could experiment with leaving it off.

I am slowly getting all of this together,
