This has probably been discussed but I wasn't sure how to search for it exactly. I just got a 1DMkIIN having used the 20D and 350D for some time. The colors and overall attrubutes of the 1DMkIIN images seems markedly different from the others...not at all in a bad way, but something I can't quite figure out. Have others seen this?

I went thru the same upgrade path. The 1D uses "styles" and the 20D uses "parameters." With the styles set to neutral and parameters set to 0, the two cameras seem to produce similar colors, but the 1D images look sharper to me, without sharpening added. The 1D seems to get perfect exposures more often than the 20D did, so I rarely have to adjust a RAW file or fiddle with levels. That certainly has made the photos look better.

Yes; I did some experiements with the "styles", but I thought that only applied to jpgs. However, when I opened the RAW file in DPP it did "default" to the "faithful" setting or style I had set for the jpgs, rather than "standard". I guess what I am seeing is the RAW images, rendered in a converter, don't seem as saturated as RAW files from my 20D.

Scott -- not sure I shared your findings, but certainly respect what you say. Perhaps the difference is in which RAW converter we use? I'm with photoshop elements on the mac (same converter as PS/CS). My understanding is that the RAW converter uses as a default the settings the camera was in at the time of the shot.

we have same situation... i rarely adjust a raw file or use sharpening tool...most of the time i just leave it...

David, thanks for the input, it helps. Hopefully others will share their wisdom. Meanwhile, I'll read the manual...again!

Got some manual reading done...page 53 says, "RAW images are processed according to the WB and Picture Style set at time of shooting." So, as I read this, the RAW image I open in RSEP or C1 or DPP will appear already tweaked according to the pic style I selected in camera. This would be contrary to my understanding of RAW images and processing.

I guess if it was simple everyone would do it....

I haven't seen the difference going from 300D to 1D MIIN and XT. I use RSP 2006 though.

Yes they do have a different look........and yes it's hard to explain, but for a lack of better terms I would have to say less "cheap looking color".......kinda like the difference between art & a postcard.

I'm not sure that the picture style parameters are preserved if you use other RAW converters.
P.S. Just checked the RSP forum and picture styles do not affect RSP, so no matter what you set the picture style to, the image will look the same when you open it with a RSP.

Perhaps if you still have the other camera, you can upload a same shot from each without any post processing so we can see.
