Are they any good?
What is the best place to buy them and what is the approx cost.
I purchased one from the camera shop for $80.
Seems awfully high. Radio Shack quoted $100.

I've got about a half dozen from people on eBay. I got most of them from eforcity.com. So far they have worked very well. I haven't noticed much difference from the OEM ones. But I don't have any imperical data to show the comparison.

Prices have been between $9 and $12 each.

I just bought couple of batteries marked C-L715H 1200mHa and they seem to work fine. From http://www.partco.fi/vidkamak-e.html

I bought a BP-512 last year from Battery Barn. Initiallt it was lasting longer than my OEM 511 that came with the camera. Now that its had some time to cycle through a few charges, the 512 doesn't last as long as the original 511.

YMMV,

I just bought two off of EBAY. Waiting for them to come it. A note... eforcecity, eforcetrading, and a few others on EBAY have the same phone contact, so it's all the same company with about four usernames. I got the "two batteries in one auction" for a grand total of 26.02 shipped. That included shipping and sale tax for CA residents. Don't be fooled... the auctions for two batteries and pretty much the same price as buying two separatley (assuming that you buy in the same purchase - to get the shipping break on the second item.)

...just my two cells... i mean, cents...

I bought Japanese noname batteries for a quarter of original price.

They have 1250 mAh (last longer then the original with 1100 mAh), they have goldplated contacts.

Why pay four times the price for the name Canon?

You get such nonames for Euro 13 - Euro 30

Is this battery cheaper than the Canon brand?

How many space batteries, one should carry. I realize this depends on the usage, but what is the number for a average person?

Hi,

Normally you can take somewhere near the 600 shots without flash, I did not believe this at first but even with some AI focus I easily got somewhere arround 450 shots and still have a full battery.

I also bought a 3rd party battery, although a bit more expensive than the ones mentioned here € 35,00 I have to get it yet but with batteries it's normally you get what you pay for.

A 3rd party battery can be as good as the original but don't expect it to be when you pay $ 13,00.

Greetings,
Frank

These are actually better than the Canons,. they are 1300 MHA instead of 1100 (last longer)

http://www.thomasdistributing.com/maha_lithium_rechargeable.htm

I also have two of these,. and although they aren't built as well as the Canon or Powerex,. they last as long as the Canon and have been fine so far.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3037733420

I recomend both,. the Powerex for ones that will last longer both on a charge and stand up to more abuse,.

but the Eforcecity battds are to good a bargain not to have a few for emergencies :)

I've always been very pleased with the products and service at http://www.batterybarn.com. I have the Vidpro BP-511 compatible and it lasts longer in my G2 than the original BP-511 that came with it. Keep in mind when you look at prices on their site, the price listed includes shipping.

I have three generics from eforcity on ebay and they work great, I don't notice any signifigant difference in performance from the OEM batteries.

Hi,

after all the posts here you could assume that you can safely go to ebay and buy any battery offered there to get a performance a lot better than Canon's.

Well, I bought two no-name batteries from eBay that are market 1250 mah (so a lot better than Canon) with 'Japanese Cells'.

Unfortunately, in my G2 they don't even last a fraction of the time my OEM BP511 lasts. But that's exactly what I expected, so I don't fuss about it.

So - you can't always be sure that you will get better performance by buying cheap...

Just my 2 cents,
Andy

I have two Canon and two third party batteries (one I just got so can't say on performance).

The differences
The Canon batteries hold a charge better when just sitting in the camera, The third party battery seems to need recharging more often if left in camera.

However, If not in left in Camera, the battery seems to lose no charge. Which is why I leave the Canon batteries in the Camera and keep the 3rd party batteries for spares.

Over the past year (D60 and 10D), I have only had two occasions when I ran out of battery power and had to load the spares. In one case I was deliberately trying to run the battery out over a multi-day period. The other was accidental and I found my 100-400 with IS on sucks down power relative to any other lens. Of course since I use the BG-ED3 battery grip it takes a lot of pictures on a fully charged set to run them out. Still have not done it in one day.

I have the backup batteries for those rare occasions I need them, same reason I have kept my D60.

I also bought 3 from them. One for a client of mine with a G3 and 2 for me. Both work well. For only 9.00ea you can not ask for more.

The construction seems pretty good. I don't see anything that would make then un-usable. The plastic is perhaps a bit thinner, but still acceptable.
