I currently just have the 18-55USM Kit Lens for my XT and am looking to add on. Not really looking to break the bank, just want to expand my horizons a little.
What do you think of this combination:
Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4 DG Aspherical - $209
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro - $199
and for good measure
Canon 50m F/1.8 II - $80
The whole thing comes in right under $500 (before tax and shipping), which is at the upper end of what I want to spend right now.
I am just trying to experiment right now with all different types of photo taking. Macro, Nature. And you can go nuts trying to figure what type of lens you should consider:confused:
Any suggestions or other alternatives would be great. Thanks:D

;)
edit: it just isn't the same as the thumbs-up guy, so I guess I gotta say it. Seems like a good budget setup to me!

Can you swing about $545? A very good set up for this budget is:
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-f4.5 DC Macro
Sigma 70-300 f4-f5.6 APO DG Macro
Sigma4Less has them for $545 combined before S&H. This gives you a nice focal range with very good IQ for the money. In addition, both give you 1:2 "macro" magnification. My 2cents...

hmmmmm.....2 macro lenses, i like that Idea, but will I miss the focal range between 70-105, I planned on using the 28-105mm as my all walk around lens.
Isnt if funny how you always seem to be stretching your budget, a few bucks here an few there, next thing you know I will talk my self into an L lens. (My orignal budget started in the 250-300 range ).
BTW how is sigmaforless.....I know I have seen their name come up a few times, are they a good place to deal with?

Very solid store, very popular place for online folks to buy their glass: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller9336.html

Hey, I was gonna recommend the Sigma 17-70 for walking around and the Sigma 70-300 APO macro for the long stuff. I'd also consider selling the kit lens if you can and forgetting the 50mm for now.

So I have to ask, what is it about the 17-70 you all like over the 28-105, is it just the wide end range? Or is just a better glass over all
Tee....I was thinking of selling the lens, but after looking at the market place forum they are not going for much and it cant hurt to have it for a back up or somehthing
Thanks for the advice everyone, there is a camera show in a town a couple weeks from now so I think I will wait and see what that has to offer.

I would take this combo.

The wide end is definately the plus and f/2.8 as well. You might miss the 70-105 that you would get from the other end, but you could always crop. You cant add to the pic if you are not wide enough, unless you take multiple pics and stitch them together in PS. I mainly use my Tamron 28-75 but am considering the Sigma 17-70 for the wider range, good build, and relatively fast. I wish it were constant f/2.8 but would probably be a $1000 lens then.

I did not even think of that, well that made that decision for me.....you guys should be sales guys :)

That would be nice, I was considering the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG because of the constant f/2.8, but I thought I would want the 70-105 overlap. But will run into the same propblem of not being wide enough. I hate it when there is soo much stuff and no cash ! :)
Time to play the lottery........

Yeah I can't believe how many people in Michigan have taken an intrest in photography, since I've never seen another person with a SLR/D-SLR in my area. I gonna go ahead and assume the worst, they're all Yupers!

Thanks the digicams and then dslr's, it looks like photography is having a resurgence, which is good.
If you have about $500 for lens, the Sigma 17-70 and the 70-300 would be a good consumer grade lens combo. I like the 17-70 over a 28-105 manily b/c of the range. The sig is faster as well, which is nice, and I'd almost bet that the sig has better optics as well.
Just to add more fuel to the fire, if you are thinking about getting serious about photography. I'd recommend getting just one prograde lens instead of two consumer grade lens that you will probably sell in a year anyway and save yourself the time, money , and the hassel. That's what happened to me. I started out with the kit and 55-200. Got a 28-90 and Sigm 70-300, then 28-135IS. Then I ended up selling all that stuff and ended up with the lenses I have now.
I'd actually recommend a Sigm 10-20, Sig 24-70 EX DG Macro, Canon 70-200f4L, and Tamron 28-75 to consider. All are great lenses with pro grade optics that won't break the bank.
