I doubt that he would know how to use a lens of such regarded status. Much too heavy for the political jello arms. Now if it was attached to their jaw... ;)

I had just received my new 1D4 and took it out for a test drive. Put the "Eye" and the 1.4x II extender on it... just to see what it'd do. The 143KB JPEG image here does not do the CR2 file justice. The photo lost most of its sharpness & pop. Shot through a shaded rusty chain link fence. 2010_04_15 5:39PM.

Here's a tight shot taken with my old 1D2. I love the melt-down in the background. The orange-yellow ghost behind the helmet is the scoreboard and the green in front is the grass. The goal post looks like two light beams. Again, the original CR2 file is sharper and has more pop. 2009_10_02 8:37PM

Hey Chris...
Three factors made me switch to this glass than the 200 2L IS; price, glass history, and seller... Price was too good to pass up... WAY TOO GOOD... This particular glass was actually used in the entertainment industry; still shots from 8 Mile and Poetic Justice, to name a few... Lastly, the seller Mark (P51Mstg) was absolutely amazing... I seriously pondered picking up this glass for over a month... I went back-and-forth with him regarding his sale and I know it probably wasn't easy for him... Nonetheless, he stuck with me and I acquired this glass through him...

Just because this Lens is very sharp wide open - do some portraits at around F4 at those apertures it is Razor sharp
when I first got mine it was never off F1.8 (which is great of course) but stopping down a few stops really makes it sing
the child in your image is real cute little fella - no doubt you will gets lot more practice on him
Sam
which is best!! on image quality I would think it impossible to tell them apart if shooting the same subject with the same settings - it would be some kind of Laboratary test to see the difference IMHO
I also have a Canon 300mm F2.8IS which is absolutly superb, but it's the 200mm that makes me smile most when seeing the results after a days shooting

I could definitely not afford the 200 1.8 or 2, but i was actually thinking of selling/trading my 100 2.8usm for the 200 2.8 :o or maybe i should go back to the 70-200 f4....
The subject isolation and bokeh at 200mm is quite pleasant!

@ air and butt -- When the tine comes, I am tempted by the price difference. I swear this old lens has something different about the images. Cannot put my finger on it. I know about the IS advantage but I really cannot see many handheld slow SS shots with this lens. When that happens with my 50L I know I am pushing too hard to get something.

200L owners I'd like to hear your thoughts on this deal: one of the "big" camera retailers offered a 200 1.8 in what he called "excellent/ minimal wear condition" for $3500 including a two year Mack warranty as well as a generous return policy. I was considering selling my 300 2.8 IS but and picking up a 200 f2 but considering this would save me between $1600-2000 I would be able to keep it.

Tough call... I was in a similar situation, Rezolution... The target was acquiring the 200L IS this year... Pondering whether or not to sell my 400 2.8L II to purchase said glass (200L IS)... Then I was introduced to the 200 1.8L and its legendary stature and history... OY VEY!!!
I seriously agonized for over a month between the 200L IS and 200 1.8L... In the end, I went with the 1.8L because of price and the amazing patience of the seller; and I still had my 400 2.8L II...
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6081/6058960310_5cdcc82e85_b.jpg
This is one of the few captures I took with both lenses... With that said, the 400 2.8L II has recently been sold since the 200 1.8L has been acquired... I honestly didn't need to sell the 400 2.8L II, but price offers were too good for me to sell off... Nonetheless, the 200 1.8L has been an amazing piece of glass... I've done a few portraiture sessions with it with wonderful results...
Anyhoo... I hope my experience has given you some direction/insight with my experience between acquiring either the 200L IS and the 1.8L version... No regret or buyers remorse since acquiring this glass...

its a question of what focal length you really intend working at most.. I have a 300mm F2,8IS as well as the 200mm F1.8
both work brilliantly with both converters
I cant give you a comparison between the 200mm F2 v 200mm F1.8 as I have never used the F2 version all I know is that my 200mm is the sharpest Lens I have ever used and has BOKEH to die for
the sharpness really comes to the fore on big prints which are breathtaking with the detail
IS is not an issue for me at all and F1.8 certainly beats F2 with that bit of extra light gathering - make no mistake though both Lenses are 'Stellar' thats why they cost the big bucks
as for which you should get only you can decide that

Thanks Butch and Chris. I ended up going with the 1.8. I have to option to send it back and pick up a grey market 200 f2 if the lens is not in the condition described. I'm not a pro shooter so saving a few bucks makes more sense as does keeping the 300 2.8. As for IS, it would be nice but the majority of what I will shoot with it is dance, HS band, and some indoor sports. I have a great Gitzo monopod to help as well. My two concerns, before buying, were the lack of Canon support and reading something about leaded glass. I wasn't sure if the external glass was leaded or if it's an internal element material.

As I replied in the other thread, you have nothing to worry about so long as you are not using it for long term storage of alcoholic or acidic(i.e. citrus) liquids which you intend to consume. You consume more lead in the food you eat than you will ever get from licking any leaded glass elements in a camera lens.

Well I have been known to get a little over excited about new glass so who knows what may happen. So if I lick the outer element I'm okay as long as I don't over do it or do it while drinking a wine cooler?

I've got nothing exciting to shoot until Friday. I may be shooting some HS football with a 1.4x. This thing is heavy and I'm really wishing it had IS so I may end up parting with it and going for the 200 f2.

^ Thanks Patrick... This lens did exceptionally well in the low-light church... Focusing was quick and locked on the subject in an instant... I had it mounted on a monopod (thank God the church allowed it), so the stability for getting crisp shots were increased... In any event, this glass has earned its first positive stripes on the "wedding" battlefield... One sample shot below:
