View Full Version : Producing a slideshow on DVD?

You know how some pro's out there give out DVD's as their "Business cards" with all their images on them moving around the screen with pretty music and lots of fading in and out?
You know, a little movie of the photographer's work?
I was wondering if anyone knew of a program that could help me to do a slideshow like that and put it on DVD so when you put the DVD in a computer or DVD player it just pops up as a regular kind of movie?
A colleague showed me his daughter's wedding through this DVD that a guy produced for them, it cost them $400 just for the DVD and some very amateur photo's.
And now my work mate at the same time saw it, and wants a similar thing for her wedding when i photograph it in October.
So any suggestions would be great :)

For a short show that runs from a CD on a PC, try: http://my.bigfolio.com/
Might not be what you're after, but it's a handy little dooberry if you're in a hurry.
Just a thought.... I'm off to a darkened room before I get roasted ;)
EDIT: Whoops... forgot to post sample (no point of posting advice without a sample :) ):
http://bigshow.bigfolio.com/?s=000001154&t=9989c90b490a956f10082b632a276f7d (ignore the music and it runs faster from CD of course)
...oh yes... and the whole thing took less than 10 minutes to put together... time is money ;)

I use Ulead CD and DVD picture show, it wasn't expensive - less than $100 yet it has heaps of features and is fairly simple to use. :D

I do this all the time with Movie Factory 4. I will tell ya tho, it's a memory intensive program, but it covers ALL of your DVD/CD burning needs. It's a little slow when I make a slideshow using two or three hundred 5-7 MB pictures. Probably normal slowness with files this size. Make sure you have plenty of RAM.

I use the Roxio Easy Media Creator software you pretty much just drag and drop photos in the program add music and your done.

I tried Pro Show Gold but I thought that the logo that flashed on the screen at the beginning certainly did not make the slide show look professional....

Arcsoft slide show maker and it must have been free when my brother bought his computer. Add music and text and doesn't compress pictures. Works great.

I use Pro Show Gold if I am in a hurry since you can make a slideshow quickly with only a few mouse clicks.
I mainly use Adobe Premiere 6.5 and sometimes use After Effects Pro if I need to add a fancy effect to an image or set of images.
DVD authoring and burning is done with Adobe Encore 1.5.

Pro-show Gold, and yes you can lose their intro.
Pro show producer has just been released also which lets you do a few more things like muti-layering photographs and stuff, but it's quite a bit more expensive. I already use the Gold version and couldn't see the point in paying the extra amount for the differences, but if you buying from scratch producer is one to consider.
If you go to their website you can download free trials. Photodex is the company, just google them. You wont be disapointed.

I use Pinnacle Studio Plus, mostly because I got it as a gift for editing video, but also because it does everything I need and is easy to use (and cheap).
If I ever grow out of it I'll probably go to Proshow too, as it seems a popular choice.

Once you pay for the software that's removed. I put my own studio introduction at the start of each slide show.

Adobe PhotoShop Elements 4 is unbeatable at producing slideshows.
The automatic Ken Burns Effect is worth he cost of the program.

exactly... buy a mac. its sooooooooo easy. Last night my fiance wanted me to put something together to show her mom, basically all the dress designs and cakes, decorations and such, and it literally took me 10 minutes to do exactly what you wanted, with music, neat transitions, etc.

I tend to avoid "neat transitions", as the effects soon get annoying, and I don't think they'll age well - remember wedding DVDs will be around for many years. Proshow can make shows in ten minutes as well, I spend about that on proof shows, but the shows I include in my package get more work - a couple of hours at least.

Del post in the wedding forum if you have proshow questions, i've used it quite a bit. Mostly it's simple but it takes a little while to get good with it. The limitation on making proof DVDs now is the speed of my PC - it takes about 5 minutes of my time, and for 400 photos takes maybe 30 minutes of PC time (rendering is kinda slow even on a fast pc).

i just tried it out....but im not to happy with it? It seems very simple...with memories on tv i could add an effect throughout the whole show (Smoke etc) but then add in fading etc....
I saw a guy who did an awesome show once, and i think my head is stuck in that place, like he would pick apart sections of the photo (The flowers, brides face, grooms hand) and then it would all fade together....
Is there options in there where i can get a bit more creative, coz all i am doing is addig all my photo's, and text etc. but i can't see any solid creativity buttons in there?? Any ideas????

You have to do your photo processing in photoshop, then bring them into Proshow. Really complex shows need proshow producer, which is about US$300, not worth it IMHO. On the http://www.photodex.com site there's a guy called Mark Ridout who does amazing work, take a look at what he does and prepare to be blown away!

I'd rather it looked like I spent a lot of time but it was actually quick and easy... you can do all sorts of cool effects, but they do take time to do well.
PIXI_666
7th of March 2006 (Tue), 19:03
I DUNNO WHAT IM DOING WRONG THEN BECAUSE ALL I SEE IS, MOVE ALL YOUR PICTURES, PICK AN EFFECT FOR EACH ONE (EG. FADED LOVEHEART, THEN FADE TO LEFT ETC.) PUT YOUR SONGS IN, THEN IT'S DONE.
WHAT OTHER EFFECTS ARE THERE - OR IS THIS ALL THERE IS?
tim

PLEASE STOP YELLING! :p ;)
You can move your slides around, you can fade them in and out, you can have them stay still but not centered, you can do a B&W version and a color version (in photoshop) and fade between them so it looks like color's draining in. You can synchronise with music, you can do borders. I avoid transition effects, I keep it simple, otherwise after watching it a few times it gets boring and looks crappy.

I use pro show gold and I am very happy with it. The clients are happy with the results and yes you can loose the intro logo and replace it with the bride and groom or any picture you choose. Good luck
