I have read the different threads and comparisons, but all in all if you had a choice just too pick, no money involved because one was going to be given to you...would you take the G3 or the G5? I ask this...because this is the second time, my G3 has broken in less than two months. I am going to do some serious complaining and am deciding if I want the upgrade, or my money back!

If I was buying from scratch, having made no investment in a g3 before, then yes I would buy the g5.

Having already invested in the g3, would I see the need to upgrade toa g5? No.

Seems like you're having some bad luck with the G3 so if it were me I would try to break the omen and upgrade to the G5.

If they upgrade you to the G5 for a modest price, maybe you should do it!

The features are similar (apart from the 1 MP) , but the G5 should have a higher resale value, if that's a consideration

Regards,
Andy (happy with my G2)

Sorry you've had a patch of bad luck.

Emotionally, you know you are not going to be happy with a fixed or replaced G3. Even if the fixed or new one is perfect forever, you aren't going to trust it.

If you can make a deal for a G5, just do it. Though there are still no guarantees, you'll feel better and have a new toy in compensation!

What happened with your G3? Mine was acting sooo weird today. It kept freezing on every shot (indoors with flash). It took FOREVER to take the picture. By that time, the shot was lost.
Does this sound broken?

Dunno Debbie, sounds more like a setting you have made, or sometimes a full CF card or Microdrive behaves like that. Check your settings and/or CF card. Put the camera on Auto and snap a few pics and see how it behaves then.

That has happened to me before. Pressed the shutter and waited an eternity before the it took the picture. Almost like it was on the 10 second timer (or longer). I've had it happen on indoor flash pictures using the internal flash, and also on outdoor pictures aimed at birds flying overhead with strong backlighting (flash off). It happened yesterday when I was trying to capture a caterpillar outdoors with flash off. I chalked it up to having the polarizer on when it shouldn't have been. After the long wait, it far underexposed the picture (came out almost totally black).

When it happens, I usually believe its related to exposure metering not focusing. Or maybe a bug in the firmware.

Well in my case...the lens now makes the grinding noise as been read around the forum before, only, before I get to full optical zoom, it shuts it self off. I went through 5 people again today, in which no one will give me my money back, or upgrade me. They are sending me tags for free shipping to fix it though. However, my concern is that I don't want to continue to have problems with it. This is the 2nd time in little over a month that it needs repairs!

Mine was taking forever to do simple functions today as well. Then the battery went dead 3 shots later. A full battery never hurts....

Debbie and Sheri,

Sounds very much like the auto focus problem to me. I have had this problem heaps of times and it was always the auto focus.

If it happens again, see if manual focus fixes the problem. If it does fix the problem, do a search on this forum for topics related to auto focus. It's come uo a few times and there are a few things you can do to minimise the problem.

In my case I do not believe it is related to autofocus, because my habit when using autofocus is to wait for a green box with half-way depressed shutter, then completely depress the shutter (or sometime I switch at that point to manual focus). Except for the indoor flash incident (a posed group shot), I was shooting moving targets in TV mode. Maybe the solution is to lock exposure. But when you press the shutter it ought to pretty quickly take the picture otherwise what's the point?

LaiLai,

Based on the facts you quoted I would go for the G5 without a doubt!

After speaking with everyone and their brother at Canon, all they will do for me is send me a packaging label so I can send it back (which I did yesterday) I also wrote them a long letter with the camera, and told them I wanted a brand new G3 or an upgrade to the G5...I have the feeling I shouldn't be holding my breath. I now will wait it out once again...and if I do get my original G3 back, debate on selling it and moving on to the G5. I would absolutely love to get the 10D, but I just don't have the money yet. Maybe someday when I can sell my own work!

I would get the G3 over the G5, while 5 MP is nice, it only a 13% or so growth from 4MP to 5MP , also the 5MP is slightly slower shooting speed because the CCD been updated, but not the rest of the camera.
