After 20+ years using "traditional" film cameras, I've made the switch. This was largely due to an extensive test with two different D30's and some pretty nice lenses, as well as the excellent information from this forum!
I took the advice of a few of you and ordered a D30, 28-70 f/2.8 L, 70-200 f/2.8 L, 1.4 II Teleconverter, and two 550EX flashes with an ST-E2 transmitter all from Greg Noble at Canoga Cameras (http://www.canogacameras.com) out of the L.A. area. I just want to say thanks to all of you for your feedback and help as well as to Brandon and Phil for the initial loan of the "trial" cameras, and finally to Greg Noble at Canoga for the awesome customer service and unbelieveably fast shipments. (and no, I'm not associated to them at all...)
Hope to have some photos to post fairly soon!
Cheers,
Cecil

Welcome! Also, your lens choice is primo- how 'bout loanin em out?! Just kidding- I look forward to your sample shots with the 28-70L to see if it really is twice as good as the 28-135 IS. The 25-70L is my next "gotta have it, Honey. Honest!" lens but she won't believe it 'till she sees it. (Don't you just HATE it when they do that?)

I bought the Canon 28-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 lenses in March, then the D30 in May. Have shot 6,800 images with the D30 and have been very happy. The 1.4x teleconverter is on my to get list.
There are some sample images on my site with descriptions of which lens and camera settings. Including some MLB shots where I borrowed a 400 f/2.8 and put it on the D30. The 70-200 f/2.8 is a great lens, it takes images that are incredibly clean and I've seen 11 x 14 prints off of a Epson 2000P from both lenses that had been very nice.
Enjoy your new companion!

"honest...it was only $250 more than the OTHER lens..."
(so it's a modest exaggeration : )
having previously owned the 28-135...i can tell you that the 28-70L is simply amazing...best $1000 i invested in a long time...
so tell your wife to drop me a note : )
i'm not at ALL biased in your favor...
i'll be posting a link for some pictures soon...
