I took these two yesterday. It was crawling around on my desk. It's actual size was slightly small than the head of a straight pin and could not see any pattern on it until I got the photos in the computer. Both shots were hand held with the Sigma 105 macro lens so they are a bit fuzzy.

thats a Varied Carpet Beetle - the larvae will eat carpets made of organic materials.
p.s I dont think Sigma 105 owners will accept hand-held shots have to be blurred!

Easiest way to hand hold shots like this is to rest the end of the lens on the surface the beetle is on- works wonders :)

This is a great tip from Brian that I now use a lot. If the angle of view is too low then I put a broad cork lid under the end of the lens.

Thanks, guys, for both lessons.
I had never seen any bugs like that before. It was so small I couldn't even tell it had a pattern on it until I got the photo.
Clever idea about resting the lens on the surface. I've just begun getting into the macro field and still have a lot to learn. Thanks again.
