Omri showed one of these a couple of days back:

I'm not sure if it is a hoverfly, but I can't find it in my bug book. When I first saw it, I thought it was a bee species, but then I saw that it was sucking nectar from these tiny flowers like a fly.

These are all cropped slightly, the first to make the shot into portrait. Because they were so active, I couldn't use 1:1.

Brian V.Thanks Brian. I was a bit worried about the hoverfly ID as these guys didn't really do the hover bit while I was watching them - they just thumped into to the flowers like bees.

Great shots :D I couldn't get that close. Are these cropped? Thanks Omri. These are about 15% crops. I couldn't get quite to 1:1 as they were a bit too active.

Absolutely fantastic shots Al. Do you use a monopod, or hand-hold? Do you use a standard flash or dedicated macro flash?

Keep up the excellent work. :-)

Keep up the excellent work. :-)Thanks! All of my bug pics were handheld. I use a 420ex flash mounted on a bracket to the left of the lens.
