I am picking the camera up really fast. Havent had alot of experience with higher end digi-cams before but have a few friends who can hold their own. Anyway, we had a HECK of a lightning storm over the weekend, and I wanted to take some nifty pics of it sooo bad but dont know where to start. I assume setting the shutter to stay open for a certain amount of time...what else? :-)

I am by no means an expert and do not have one shot of lightning, but you will need a tripod. You will also need large depth of field, as you never know where the lightning will strike! Others may be able to more specific details.

You'll want to put your camera on a tripod, set the focus manually to infinity, then use the manual mode. Set your shutter speed to 10 seconds and your aperture to f5. Use the remote control to take a picture and adjust your shutter speed until you get a sky that looks OK in your LCD. Then aim for the lightning and shoot away. Its hard to time it properly, so just take a lot of pictures and hope.

MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR TRIPOD ARE OUT OF ANY LIGHTNING DANGER!!

I messed with this some last night. I friend of mine w/ a Nikon Coolpix 5000 was asking me if I could set my shutter all the way to manual and keep it open as long as I hold the button down like on his? or is 15 seconds as long as it will stay open? I figured out how to take an actual decent picture, but it wasnt dark enough yet....

Thanks for the replys so far!!

There's a pretty thorough fireworks thread here, created around the 4th of July:)

The findings should also apply here!
