View Full Version : Want to get rid of Synch cord!!

It is a pain when you take a shot in the studio only to discover that the synch cord has once again fallen out of the camera. I know that Wein make a trigger for the top of the hot-shoe. I dont know what its called and if it is compatible with my old Bowens monolites (the ones with the "earphone jack" plug for the synch cord (maybe theyre all like that -- i dont know any other make but mine). Any help on getting "cordless"?

I have that very thing for my mono lights and it works just great in the studio. Sounds like you'll want the "monoplug" version. My only complaints are that they have to be in the line of sight of the IR trigger that mounts on the flash unit. This has only been an issue like three out of a hundred times.

If you already have IR slaves on your strobes AND you own a canon flash you can save a bunch of coin by setting your flash to manual and the lowest power setting and using it to trigger the strobes. Just point it at the ceiling and go for it. When set to manual there is no "preflash". This works best in smaller livingroom/garage set ups.

thanks ... i do have a 550EX but only 2 slaves with 3 lights so i need the first to be fired by something for the others to do there job ... any other suggestion?

Well, you can still do as justme_dc suggests with your 550EX. You just need to buy a slave trigger for the non-slave flash unit. These are available from B&H and similar for around US$20 - US$25.

There are two wireless alternatives that are very good. I use the Pocket Wizard Plus.There is a wireless transmitter that sits in the camera hot shoe and a receiver that plugs into one of the studio lights. The other lights are set on "slave". You can also purchase a module that goes into Sekonic light meters that can fire off your lights wirelessly so you can meter them. I use this system for my 10D, G2, and Nikon cameras.

Another wireless alternative is the Freewire by Quantum.
