Ok I am confused. Why would a memory card reset the image count that came from another camera? What is the secret to avoiding this? Thanks.

I stand to be corrected on this, but If you format the other card before using it, your count should carry on from where it left off.
If you put a card from another camera in to your camera it will carry on from it's last setting (hope this makes sense...)

Hopefully somebody will confirm (or deny) this and explain it better than me!

I remember I formatted a memory card in one camera and then completely forgot I did this and then placed it in another and the count went to IMG_001. Later I put it in the original camera and it reset that counter.

Seriously this is a critical flaw in Canon programming. Reason I ask is I am checking out a new (well almost new) 20D and I want to see the count. But I am scared that if the guy doesnt have a memory card on hand and I place my own card that I will reset the count.

What I did was I reformatted this card 3 times on my PC. I hope this works better.

Oh yeah, interesting enough, this seems to have no effect if I use a CF card in my Olympus and then my Canon cameras. All they seem to do is create a new folder and continue the count.
