problem with the zoom lens

After turning the camera on, th elens does not come out, instead it produces litle noise. It seems as if camera was not powerfull enough to push out the lens.
Camera service place has suggested expensive replacemenet of th entire zoom mechanism but I have heard them saying that it's a magnet which is involved in moving the lense outthat has failed.

Any expert out there to help with his advice. I am an electronics engineer and with a bit of advise can probably look into it myself.
