This seems like a much better lens than the 18-55MM IS.

I may have to make the upgrade.

These won't win any awards for composition, but I was quite pleased at how sharp they turned out. They were both taken at 33mm.

I've owned everything from 24-70 f2.8L and 24-105 f4 IS L to Tamron and Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lenses. I used the 28-135 IS lens also as my only lens for sometime also.

So I was not sure what to expect when using this lens today. Was a overcast winter day so of course the lighting would be terrible and this lens is not the fastest lens out there. However for its price I would say that it past my tests. I got it with a 40D that I recently picked up for a real bargain and I have to say, for the money this lens is pretty good. Well at least out doors it is pretty good that is.

Here are my two samples, not a lot of post processing added to them. The Indian head only dark vignetting to add darkness to the head. The Japanese Gazebo none.

but why do all of the shoots look so flat? your lambo shot is ok but going through the others all the color seems off to me. is it a pp thing or the lens just doesnt do well at that?

I've found in my experience of using this lens, CA needs tweaking in PP on pretty much every image, and I'd love something faster, but in terms of it's focal range, It's so useful I can't find a single lens that can replace it for me.

Would this lens give me the same sharp result's as the 18-55 ?

I can pick one up very cheap and it give's me that little more distance over the 55mm...

The review on ephotozine says this
positive points of the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM are:
Excellent resolution holds up throughout the focal range.
IS system helps a lot in low light.
The lens makes a good replacement for kit lenses
The focal range ideal for a walkabout lens.

The negative points are:
Distortion is bad at the widest settings and a little CA creeps in.
Front lip is prone to damage.
Hood is an optional extra.
Can anyone explain Front lip prone to damage why

Can anyone explain Front lip prone to damage why

I don't have a clue and I've had this lens for some time now and used it extensively without a problem. I took a look at the front lip and can't see any real difference between it and my other Canon lenses.

Here is a shot I took. It is six images self stitched together. Taken with the 17-85 lens.

This lens is wide but its not this wide, not even a 10mm is this wide. The river actually turns the other way it appears.

It is capable of producing good images, although the max aperture of 5.6 throughout most of the range has me using it less and less. The IS is very nice though and the focal range sure is versatile. I would certainly advise it as a significant upgrade from the kit lens. Here are a few recent random shots from this lens:

#1 - 61mm, f/10, 1/125 sec, ISO 640

#2 - 85mm, f/5.6, 1/80 sec, ISO 640

I usually spend most of my time over in the bird and wildlife sections and only just discovered this thread so thought I'd post a couple of my 17-85 shots.

These two were taken with 55mm of extension tubes....not too bad for a poor man's macro .......

A few from this morning. It snowed today. On October 10th! At least photography makes me less angry about it. Both shot at 85mm, my favorite length on this lens:

I have owned one for a few years now, and I will say it is a lens that is good but not great optically, yet better than great when it comes to all around usefulness. If you get used to the range on this lens it becomes very difficult to find something to replace it. The problems at the wide end are fairly easy to fix if you shoot RAW, and the middle to long range of this lens is very good straight from the camera.

I think you'll be disappointed coming from the 24-70L. I've rented it a few times and it blows the 17-85 away.

Haven't posted here yet.
One from this evening, and one from not long after I bought it with my 50D back in Feb. Don't worry about the dark spot in the corner on the tail of the 380, it was a wire fence I was shooting through.

My lens could use some cleaning though.....

Just got this lens yesterday with a nice used 20D. Was going to sell the lens and keep the 20D but after playing with the lens I kind of changed my mind and might keep it. My other lenses are Sigma 28-70 2.8-4 [nice lens, just isn't wide enough for me], Sigma 18-125 [which the 17-85 IS seems to be a little better than], and Sigma 70-300 DG [which I may sell and get the "Nifty 250" 55-250 IS. I'm thinking IS is the way to go. I sometimes get out-of-focus throw aways due to too slow shutter speed and IS will help with this.

Took this with 20D and 17-85 IS today :

nice one , I've done some with candles as wel, I 've discovered that mostly I tend to work in low light preferably, don't know if it has to do with traumas of a past life, BUH? unfortunately when going outside I haven't got the feeling of being satisfied with the results obtained with my copy of the lens.. pitty really coz the range it covers is very atractive for an all-rounder.
