There are a lot more parts there than you might think. A lot of rings stacked together there and parts hidden by other parts.

Yes, it is pretty unnerving to take stuff apart for the first time. Some of those screws were really tight and I thought I was going to strip the heads getting them off. Had to tap with a little hammer while twisting to get a few of them loose.

Many of the tiny screws are different sizes too... Well keep us updated on what happens with yours.

How did this happen?
The 17-85mm is a great replacement.
Be careful of it's own tendency to die unexpectedly too. My experience with that fault has been terrible, but look for more info before making the jump!

the problem is i live in the Caribbean so i cant get it checked out here, unless i go to the us or uk ect.... and the price for me to ship the lens and back is like buying a new one

but between the 18-135mm and the 17-85mm usm lens what do you think ?

;) yup, and the replacement was actually cheaper too! The build quality is so superior, have no zoom creep as suggested by others, and the extra 2 mm at the wide end is very noticeable...long live the 15-85 :D

The 17-85 was on the camera and it had to be taken quick! They are both quite heavy crops as I didn't want to get too close to it and frighten the poor animal.

You can straighten out in LR by going to Tools>Crop...just place cursor on either side of frame and straighten! Nice shots btw.

Much better Humpy :D

I used this lens on the 7D last week at the beach and I was very happy with it. I might take it again. I bought it 2nd hand a few years ago and it came with a filter that I kept on the lens. I was never happy with it so the lens sat there unused. I even tried to sell it without success. I decided to take the filter off and I'm much happier with the results now so it's no longer for sale.

Fantastic shots but the blue tent one is an absolute CRACKER !!!! I love the obscurity of it :D
thanks Humpy. It was actually a bicycle ride from Melb to Healesville to raise money and awareness of cancer, this weekend just gone. About 1500 riders I think, that was only a fraction of the tents, it was mind boggling all the work it took just for one nights camping, then they all turned round and rode back again.

Another bump for the old girl. My first lens, my first DSLR (40D) and my first trip with it. I loved this lens. Don't think it deserved all the hate, though it was perhaps a tad overpriced when bought new as I did...

I took this lens with me on a trip to Moab as a backup to my 40mm and 8mm.

I ended up using it more than I thought I would. It didn't do so well in the high-contrast shots on the rocks, most of the photos needed alot of PP and had noticeable distortion :(

I still got some shots that I liked though:
