New Canon

I'm looking at buying a G2 but before I do, does anyone know if the next version (i.e. G3) is about to be released.

Don't know but you can bet the price will not be as good as the G2 is now. And if so it will most likley be a 5 or higher Megapixle. Maybe it will make the G2 price lower.

Since the G2 has only been available for (at most) 3 months (?), I'd say there's no new G series camera until late summer 2002. Depending on how the US recession goes, and this Christmas buying season in particular, it could be longer unless Canon is committed to an annual update of this camera. Canon is more conservative than some other camera manufacturers, so changes may not be all that significant even if a G3 were to emerge next year.
Conclusion: buy your G2 now, take some photos over Christmas, enjoy
