is there any chance i can connect my camera to my 580 ex besides the "off camera shoe cord 2" when using a flash bracket?

Not if you want to retain ETTL.

The only other option is the wireless transmitter, but i don't think it will work with positioning like that anyway.

Basically if you are trying to get out of the expense of the Canon one, don't.

The original Canon Cord will also work if you can find one - does not have the pin that locates into the hotshoe, but is otherwise identical to Canon Cord 2. I got one on ebay for very little money, because the seller told everyone it was not compatible with digital ;)

Are you referring to the OA-2?

I've noticed numerous sites including B&H stating this is not compatible with EOS digital cameras. I don't understand why it wouldn't be compatible. It has the five connection points. It looks like it would work to me.

Does anyone have any ideas why this would not be compatible?

doesnt the 580ex have a pc synch connection..... in which case you could use a pc synch cord. no ettl.

Sorry I didn't get back to this before now...

No, not the OA-2 ...what I'm referring to is the original Canon Cord - absolutely identical to Canon Cord 2, 5 pins, short curly cord ...just missing the peg that comes down to lock it into the camera hotshoe, and also missing the number "2" on its case. The hotshoe part of the cable DOES have the hole to accept the security peg from the flashgun. There's no reference number on it - just says "Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord"
