I am looking to buy a general purpose tripod and a used Manfrotto 440 carbon is available - is Carbon worth the extra money and do you have to have a magnesium head with them (more money !!). Thanks in advance for any help

I don't know about the head (I doubt it makes a difference. you should be able to put whatever head you want on it) but the carbon fiber is tons lighter. I think that's the only real difference. it's worth it if you need a lighter tripod.

The 440's a very nice tripod; I have one. You don't need to buy any particular head type - the reason for getting a mag. head would be to keep the weight down (which is usually a concern of original carbon fiber purchasers).
