View Full Version : NYC POTN Meet Times Square Area Street Photography

It looks like it's warming up a bit! What do you say we hook up in the Times Square area and just walk around with our cameras? We could mill around there for an hour or so, then walk south to Hell's Kitchen where one of my favorite flea markets is, and to cap it off probably plunge into B&H which is a few blocks away.

Any takers? March 12, Sunday, around 12:30 noon. I'd rather we've had lunch already prior to meeting so we can dive right into photography. For those with hunger pains though, not to worry. Hotdog stands abound. Bring a wide or tele lens, each has its advantages :)

I fear these trips won't be "financially sound" for me. Sounds like an awesome little "outing", but at the cost of hundreds of dollars to myself, I just don't see it as a good idea. :-(

I would definitely like to join (I've been waiting for the next POTN meet), but I have another engagement in New Jersey for Sunday. I don't suppose you could move it to Saturday, eh?

You also may want to keep the weather in check. The weekend looks to be surrounded by wet weather, but predictions this early are often inaccurate. It could change in a heartbeat.

Is anyone up for a Harbor Seals boat trip out on Long Island?

Ron - awww c'mon, if you sell your 35L you'll be able to fund several trips to the city :)

Chris, my Saturdays are pretty much blocked off, as I have to take my son to swimming lessons. I could do Saturday late afternoon to evening though, but maybe not this weekend.

Palladium, that looks interesting. When's a good time to go?

TSW, yup we'll have to see what the weather is, it should be clearer as the weekend draws near. If it's just a bit drizzly I may still go, not when it's pouring hard though.

I have my brother staying with me in town this weekend, can't make it guys. Only consolation is that I dislike Times Square, and I would probably just complain about the throngs of tourists. Have fun though and I look forward to next time!

Sorry folks, I'll have to call this off. It's the first great weekend of the year and unfortunately I am ill with something. Planned to bike much of the day today but instead Im lying down on my bed. I planned to go ahead with the shoot tomorrow, even if I'm alone, but I don't see that happening. Anyway let's reset it.

James, you're right about Times Square, too touristy. The only thing going for it is that people are more tolerant of other people taking pictures of them, an excellent exercise in developing street shooting skills. Anyway, omce you go south to Fashion Ave, and West to 8th Ave and beyond, that's where NYC character gets better. Oh well, next time :)

Hey Andy! I didn't know you're into bikes too. We gotta ride sometime. I have a Bridgestone MB-2, converted to singlespeed, a Litespeed hardtail, a Litespeed road bike, and a Strida folder. I'd love to get a Santa Cruz Blur soon, that is if my wife approves (need to work on that). :)

I'd be game for a city meet-up sometime. I live on the Island.

I've always wanted to go find and shoot the remnants of the White Star terminal (of Titanic fame). Obviously it's on one of the piers...

For those that need a better idea than Times Square or are not aware of this event in New York City.

I went to last year's event at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens for the first time and it was photographer fun! Brooklyn Botanic Gardens Cherry Blooms Festival (http://www.bbg.org/exp/cherries/sakura.html) This only happens once a year and easy to get to by subway.

Here are some of my snapshots from last year's event.

I was actually planning to take a trip to the botanical gardens later this when the weather gets better and I can get some extension tubes, but hey, why don't we hold a POTn meet there? The gardens idea, as well as John's idea for the boat trip in Long Island, sound fantastic. It looks like there are going to be plenty of meets when the sun is shinin' and the birds are chirpin'.

I'm also planning to revisit the Intrepid (the aircraft carrier along the west side highway) and the MoMA. If anyone has any other ideas of things to see in NYC, I'd like to hear about them. I'm going to have plenty of time over the summer. And once I attain my license in a few months (hopefully), I'll be making plenty of trips to the city with my glass.

I've gotten some great skyline and Statue of Liberty shots on the Circle Line Cruise that goes around Manhattan. It leaves from the same place as the Intrepid I believe. Next time I go I'm going to try to go around sunset and get some night/sun down shots.

Sweet, Rich! Thanks! That's the one.

I've always had a lot of fun just wandering the east village and shooting, but there's a lot of places to shoot in the city. The botanical gardens sounds like a really neat idea.

Good idea! Let's set that date, Sunday works best for me, but I see that the Taiko drums are on Saturday. I do have some company from out of town that weekend (actually a whole month) but I guess I'll have to drag them along, or ditch them.

Usually on Sundays I wander alone on the streets, taking pictures. Anyone who has their Sunday free and wish to tag along, just give me a holler. If you bike, even better, we can cover a lot of ground that way.

Dave, I think most would feel the same way if we talk Gaggiaese. :) So how do you tamp your grounds? N, S, E, W quadrant, with slight polishing and tapping to finish it off? 30 pounds pressure I presume? I hope you don't use the crema disc, that's cheating :)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (http://www.metmuseum.org)
has less photo restriction and is a great museum to photography. Because some of the sides of the musuem are in glass permitting natural sunlight in, depending on the time of the day you can take some photographs of intersting light being cast on some the museums art.

You have Coney Island. The famous boardwalk, amusement park, roller coaster and near by aquarium. I would advise all to go there and photography it. There is serious talk about redevelopment in Coney Island and if it does happen this famous landmark will change for good.

In April you have the New York International Auto Show (http://www.autoshowny.com/)

Then in late June you have the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island (http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml) . Here are some snapshots from last year's parade.

In late August you have the THE HONG KONG DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL IN NEW YORK (http://www.hkdbf-ny.org/) . I have not find the time to get my photographs posted on my website, but I say this was a serious event and exciting to photograph. There were teams all the way from Canada entered in the race.

Another good source of little know events in New York City is the free morning newspapers, Metro and AM New York. I usually pick them up on Thurday and Friday and many times have given me ideas of events to photograph.

LOL Mark, I love the bike (now). I made some mods to it and it is now my most ridden bike. Good synopsis on what's happening to NYC POTN'rs, one would think that you jot down notes for a living ;)

Yo, Yola, I used to live around the corner from Montaque Street in downtown Brooklyn. Then my doggie gave birth to puppies and out popped Nickysan and the condo board threw us out of the building. He's just too hairy.
