This shot was taken about 5 miles from my home...
I have taken a few scenery/outdoor shots with my D-490, and I am currently looking at wildlife shots (with a camera upgrade).
What am I doing wrong? What am I missing?

I can see several areas of potential in your picture, but IMHO the following distract:
The branches at the top seem haphazard, and don't help frame the photo for me. Framing with tree branches is often effective, but these feel like they accidentally ended up in the picture.
The powerline and light posts in the background are distracting.
The lighting is not optimal in this picture. Returning in the early morning or late evening might offer you better light. The current light is flat (which can be effective lighting for some pictures, but isn't working for me in this case).
I'm not sure what the subject is of this photo.
On the other hand, I like the colors present in some of the bushes. Move around for a composition that emphasizes what you love, and minimizes or removes what doesn't add to the composition.
Keep shooting.

Thanks, I can see most of the area's that you mentioned, but only after you mentioned them! I guess that's what it's all about....
I will try to get an morning/evening shot as you advised...
Many thanks

Bigwigg,
I think you have the right idea but you did not capture it.
I think in this case you should have tried to get a better angle from which to shoot. The colors and clarity of the photo are great but it doesn't jump out at me. I don't see a focal point or a subject.
Go back and shoot it again from a different angle, that might help. When I find places or subjects that are hard for me but I like, I just keep shooting and shooting them until I get it right.

I see where you are going with this or trying to go.
All it is is practice. Experiment with different views.
Check out a local bookstore and see other photographers work.
All it takes is some practice.
