I would like to purchase a Macro Lens for my 10D, and wondered which Lens would be the best. I will be useing it for flower photography. I am looking at the 50 mm f2.5 and the 100mm f2.8 USM. Thanks.

I'd like a casual macro setup and was wondering what is so wrong with sticking a "closeup filter" on the end of a 28-135 IS USM? When in a dusty field, LESS switching of lenses is a good thing. Could someone briefly explain advantages / disadvantages of a dedicated macro?

I had the same question for my sales person (Patrick) at Samy's Camera in Los Angeles. It was recommended that I go with the 100mm. I haven't used it yet, but, Patrick has never let me down with his recommendations. I am attending a macro class in Pasadena in September. I will know more then.

Although effective, close-up filters do not provide the image quality that a dedicated macro lens does. I have the 100mm, and am very happy with it on my 10D.

I personally use extension tubes...very user friendly and you get more than one option by combining the different tubes. For the price, you can't beat it! Kenko from B&H. Check out this thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=14471
Done with extension tubes.

I have been wondering also about macro vs. extension tubes. I have the 300mm f/4L IS. How sharp would extension tubes be with that compared to 100mm macro? Do ext tubes also work with other lenses?

I was wondering about the 180mm macro lens, does anyone have it and can they show us some samples.
I tried both in the store but would like to see some samples.

It will work wonders with that lens,. although 300mm is a little long for how most use a macro,. I have even used the extension rings at 500mm.
This is the beauty of extionsion tubes,. htye do not effect the lens quality at all. What you loose is focus to infinity,. in fact depeding on the length of tube you apply you may end up with only a matter of inches of usable focus depth. I find they are easier to use with a zoom for that reason,. my 70-200 f/2.8 and tubes work very well.

There is no single macro lens solution for all flowers. In the last month, I have shot "belly flowers" that are smaller than a pencil eraser, and I have shot normal flowers that are several inches across. Although I carry around an extension tube, I use it rarely. My versatile zoom is the 28-200mm Canon, and zoomed out to 200, it can get in tight on most normal flowers that I've found. Note that my D60 camera has the 1.6 factor, so that alters things a bit.

I have the 100 macro and it is a very nice lens. I looked at this one and the 50 and 65. I resorted to the 100 as I like to be as far back from the subject as possible so as not to interfere with any natural lighting.

Hi,
I use a Raynox snap-on macrolens, for extreme closeups use the DCR-250 they also have a DCR-150 which is less extreme.
It works wonders on a 35-105 lens, when combined with a bit of zooming you get REALLY close.
I bought it once for my HP850 and was surprised it also worked on the 10D.
Look at my homepage in the macro folder for some examples.
Greetings,
Frank
