John, the copmosition on the first one is very good, the hikers lead you into the image, take out the glare in the centre and top and you would have a better image, clouds slightly burnt out.try exposure compensation and exposure lock on a mid colour. 2nd image is good as in its layout. but after that sorry the foreground colour to vivid .

I agree with mbackh about the lens flare - but I think the foreground colour in #2 is fine - typial lakes for me.

I don't think the flare is so bad, I think people give flare a hard time, it doesnt always detract from the picture and can add realism.

Looks like you need some shadow lightening on #2 - there's very dark tree areas that seem blobish.

they both look pretty nice to me. I agree, flare can add to a picture iif it's in just the right place.
