I am starting a Press Photography course in the autumn, and basically, I am in a position where I could buy a Canon 10D. I have a Canon EOS 300 (I think its called a 'Rebel 2000' in America) at the moment.

So what are your thoughts on the 10D? I don't really want to spend that much cash (they are about £1200 body only here in the UK), but if it really is as good as people claim it to be then I will buy.

Also, I have a Canon 75-300mm USM lens which I use with my EOS 300, will that be compatible with the 10D?

Thanks for your help in advance!!

Tom

Hello Tom.

I had a D60, and now use a 10D. The 10D is a great camera! (the D60 is great as well, but the 'little' improvements present in the 10D - especially in the autofocus department - were worth the move in my case)

All of Canon's EF lenses are compatible with the 10D, as are the EX Speedlite flashguns and many other EOS accessories.

If money is tight consider the D30. Still a great camera, but with the advent of the D60 and 10D the price should be pretty cheap. I only goy my 10D because my camera was stuck in Service, and I had jobs to do.

Cheers for the help.

Does anyone know the availability situation in the UK? I rang one local photographic store (Link Photographic), and they said that they have a 4 person waiting list. I then rang a national-chain store in the same mall (Jessops) and they said they have them in stock right now. That doesn't seem right does it?

Hi Tom,

In a word ........ 'patchy'. I have just bought a 10D from the London Camera Exchange - Bath. They had just taken delivery of 10 but the guy reckoned they wouldn't last more than a few days once the word got out (01225 462234 if you want to try them). The story was the same everywhere I went i.e. none in stock, in short supply, waiting list :-(

Another Photo shop in Bristol had *one* which had been in the shop just 2 hours before someone bought it over the phone and driven from London to pick it up!

Funny thing was, I had decided to go for a Fuji S2 Pro as my first DSLR (partly because I found one at a very good price but also because I just couldn't get my hands on a 10D to try it out) and just popped into the LCA on the off chance on my trip to by the S2. Fate ? :-)

Good luck, Dave B

Bear in mind that "Jessops" will "price match".

I understand store managers can price match to prices in stores within a 10 mile radius; to price match internet offers they need authorisation from head office (which they do not always get if stock is in short supply). Obviously competitor has to have item in stock.

best price i have seen recently in UK is at calumetphoto.com (who also have a number of stores) is £1,176 (priced at £1,001 plus VAT).

I got my 10D from jessops at £1,176 based on such a price match to a Calumet Store in London.

Additional information for anyone looking at purchase of 10D in UK.

EOS Magazine (which I believe is independent but "sponsored" by Canon) have a cashback offer on purchase of 10D until 30 August. It is a subscription magazine, so you may have to subscribe, costs £16.50 per annum for 4 quarterly editions.

£100 cashback on 10D body only
£200 cashback on 10D with Canon lens.

So after "cash back" I have purchased 10D and 17-40L for "net cost" of £1,625 from my local Jessops store.

(And please, I do not want to be reminded of prices being much cheaper in the US, I did live there for 5 years and still wince every time I see prices where it is virtually £1 =$1)
