First let me thank the people who replied to my last post. These boards really help you make an informed decision. I am planning on ordering a D30 tomorrow from Canoga Cameras. I keep seeing that company’s name so it seemed logical. My big problem/dilemma is that I am virtually clueless about lenses. I understand the zoom (300 gets you closer than 200) portion but the rest might as well be hieroglyphics. I do know that the Canon “L” series is a bit out of my price range right now. I would like a lens at or under $300.00 that will produce good images. I usually shoot anything I can find time to, day or night. Usually from 3ft or farther. I am not looking for perfection at this price, just quality pictures. Any help you guys could provide on which lens I should order would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance

For that price, 28-105mm. Otherwise, if you're willing to spend approx $50 more, the 24-85mm. Or for another $100-$150, the 28-135mm IS.

50mm, f1.4 USM Canon. This is a terrific lens. About $365.

Rather than buy a cheap zoom that you will replace later. Buy a lens that will yield top quality images and you will find useful for a long time. The 50 1.4 is such a lens, but is out of your price range and a little "long" as an "only" lens.
I would buy the Canon 28 2.8 (Around $200 or less!)
It's as sharp as an L lens.
Is a great "normal" lens focal length on the D30. And is really compact, and a great "always n the camera / walk around lens"
Some recent photos of mine shot with the Canon28 2.8 can be found at: http://www.pbase.com/dwerner/trains
Good Luck!

Agreed. I'm not somebody who has to be always on top of the latest camera and technology, but seriously just buy something more modern.
unless you meant the 30D of course. that's a different story
