View Full Version : lens seems to be picking up distortion

One of my lenses (my 28-135) seems to be getting distortions in the outer regions of the image on my two most recent shoots.
Both were outdoors in summer heat, so I am wondering if it is a heat problem or if maybe I have banged the lens around too many times.
I have not noticed this distortion indoors, but only outdoors so far.
Just curious what you all think.

I noticed some slight out of focus issues in some recent photographs, more out of focus than distortion on the same lens and chalked it up to being a cheap "consumer" lens. What exactly do you mean by distortion?

I will try to add picture example this evening.
By distortion I mean that the center is dead on focus and sharp and the sides tend to be blurry as if that portion of the image was in motion (versus out of focus). Since it happens on both sides and the center is sharp, it is not me or the focus; so it must be the lens.
The distortion tend to look like the wind effect in photoshop (although to a lesser extent)

Please notice that the model, the fountain near her (in front and behind) as well as the grass/bushes behind her are all in focus (within the depth of field).
Meanwhile if you look to the left side of the image, the fountain shows it a bit, but the bushes, which are closer then some of the ones on the right (which are in focus), but farther then the model (meaning they should be within the depth of field) are bluring out. I might blame wind, except the fountain is fuzzy on the left side as well, although photoshop did a better job of fixing.
I can see a demarkation line in the water coming from the fountain about where the left side of the pedastal is.
I have seen this in a few other shots as well, but this one reminded me to ask. If the range was different I might understand, but since it is only the one side and within the DoF range. I suspect my lens. Other explainations are welcome.
Almost forgot not cropped only sharpened then jpeged.
28-135 IS at 47mm, shutter 1/180, Aperture f4.0, ISO 100, Bright, hot day with scattered clouds.
Thanks

Hi,
You shot this shot in an angle I believe.
Please try the following.
Take a piece of papier with printed text and take a photograph in a 90 degree angle so right at it.
The text should appear sharp along the whole area of the shot (slight roll of on the edges is normal in most lenses).
Greetings,
Frank
