Challenge #57 - Under Construction - WINNERS

Many thanks to all for submitting your pictures, I enjoyed all of them, and had a hard time picking the winners.

Soon after closing the challenge, I began to search in every submission the signs to discover the process of a photo under construction. After realizing that it was a task beyond my abilities, I limited my search to find simple and effective ways to show subjects under construction or the signs of construction near by.

May be my fault, but I still have a couple of pictures were I didn’t found a direct link to ‘Under Construction’ :o .

All the pictures have a high technical level and follow the basic rules of composition (at least to my personal understanding) so the main criteria to pick the winners was again a subjective appreciation of its content.

Submisions

Boutty – Road WorkThe road under construction filling the foreground, the machines in a row rolling directly to the photographer, the dust cloud clearly revealed by the backlight but blown by the wind away of the main subjects tell the story I was looking for. The black and white blends without confusion the road and the machines that otherwise would have been of very different colors. Nice picture.

andrewaaa5 – socks for cash (in Riga : )Lovely old lady. Her face and hands show a hard long life, but she seems peaceful and quiet. I would like to see the woven wool behind her hands, but even without it the overall picture is very descriptive. I love the shadows and the contrast with the small overexposed background at the top left.

marie – sorting it all outClose attention to the details from both the photographer and the workers. I like the sharp angle of view. The very little amount of pebbles near the tool tells that they are working there and the small dump truck behind lets us know that the work is bigger than what we see. The flat clean floor splashed with the vivid colors of the clothes, helmets and the truck make a pleasant background. Really nice picture marie.

Terrywoodenpic – Altar in memory of AudreyThe title puts everything inside the picture in a special context. A careful work made with love. Also the under construction story is strong there. The carpenter (self-portrait?) carefully matches the frames surrounded by wonderful tools, being the old workbench the best of all. The warmer tone of the wood pieces piled in the background contrast with the clear new frame being constructed and the yellowish light in the head and in some wood borders add volume to the somewhat flat light (from the flash?). I love your picture.

am_pitbull_terrier – A Watchful Eye From The Drivers Seat The idea of shooting the signs through the mirror is great. It is also interesting that the things inside the mirror appear as shot with a wider angle lens, adding a lot of perspective to the whole picture. There is no doubt of work in progress from the signs and the worker. Nice shot.

alans220 – Watching and WaitingThe scaffolds surrounding the church are the best way to say 'under construction'. The tombstones and infrared add a bit more. ‘Centuries under construction’ seems to say the picture. I am not sure if there is snow or just grass whitened by the infrared process in the foreground, but it is a wonderful picture either way.

blacksmurf – The last doubt The last doubt after too many doubts, it tells also about a long period of construction (hopefully not too many centuries). Nice idea. The angle of the shot and the light from the left along with the recessed borders of the pieces create volume from an otherwise flat subject.

Maureen Souza – A New Plumbing System It is not possible to pretend that I ignore what happened to Skip while judging your photo. I am sure it is a hard moment in the life of a nurse and photographer to have her husband ill, and shoot the pictures. You are full of courage posting it here. I know you shot the external signs of a major reconstruction, but you also shot the hope and confidence that everything will be better in a few more days. Nice picture, if I am allowed to say that.

RAW – The cheap wayInstead of cheap I would say hard way of using cards as building blocks to build card castles. Nice idea and nice picture too. It shows fragility and instability by shooting the cards edgewise, it is simple, and the transition from the floor to the background is just a shift in light level, interesting.

BottomBracket – The High Lifter The powerful lifter with (almost) nothing but the blue sky in the background make me think of a building that will grow to fill the sky in the near future. It is an interesting story teller crane, but perhaps the lifting hook included in the picture will reinforce the idea of under construction. I said almost nothing in the background because there is another powerful lifter there: the airliner near the top, but as it has to do more with travel and tourism, it may be part of another story. :)

Sophia – Seattle Monorail Collision - Under Construction A nice picture. The light of the sky and clear buildings in the far background and the colorful vehicle of the foreground beautifully frame the train as the main subject, but I can not see signs of something under construction. The title and the TV news truck in the lower right gave me a clue, and I found some news about the collision in November 2005 and the plans to reform the monorail again. I guess there is another train stuck behind, but it is hard to see it without reading the details first.

ma-s – It’s only a game Another beautiful picture without clear ‘under construction’ references. I have just heard the name of the surok game a few days ago but I know nothing about it yet. Nice lighting color and composition though. You may tell us what I was unable to read about construction in your picture.

Winners

First place: TerrywoodenpicBecause the picture shows very well the main subject in construction, the constructor and many of the tools required for the work. The title tells us of a strong motivation to do the work.

Second place: marieBecause a very small amount of pebbles tells all the story

Third place: BouttyBecause of the wonderful luminosity created by the dust cloud and the backlight

http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:fNmgTxpogecJ:web.mit.edu/dsl/img/under-construction.gif.gif :) It may be everything, from a small handcraft to a huge dam to hold a river. Roads, buildings, real boats or tiny airplane models, mechanical marvels or delicately stitched fabrics, things made by you or by others, but clearly still UNDER COSTRUCTION.

No other special rules.

Enjoy.

Congrats to Terrywoodenpic, marie and Boutty on their wonderful winning photos! You guys did a wonderful job. Thanks to rpolitsr for the tough job of judging and all the nice comments about each entry!

As you can tell, I didn't have the time or inclinations to go out and take a photo. But I mentioned kiddingly to Skip that I should enter him as my "Under Construction" photo and he really wanted me to do it. I finally gave in and did what the poor patient asked :):)
He came home this afternoon but still has a long road to recovery (12 weeks).

First, congratulation to all the winners!

As I had nothing special under contruction at home and RAW had used my "playing card house" idea :D , I had to create something else... ;)

What is SUDOKU? A small quotation from Wikipedia:

"Sudoku (Japanese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_language): 数独, sūdoku), also known as Number Place, is a logic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic)-based placement puzzle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzzle). The aim of the canonical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canonical) puzzle is to enter a numerical digit from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid) made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions"), starting with various digits given in some cells (the "givens"). Each row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Completing the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Although first published in a U.S. puzzle magazine in 1979, Sudoku initially caught on in Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) in 1986 and attained international popularity in 2005."

Well, it was not so known after all. In Finland you can't find a newspaper or magazine, that has not a Sudoku puzzle to solve. There are of course easy ones for kids, but also very nasty examples :o .

If still new to you, have a try and have fun! But remember, it's just a game :

And many other sites, which you will find with Google.

# 3 Boutty

congratulations to everyone who took part

thank you for the very difficult task of judging Rpolitsr
and the comments which you expressed
much appreciated , especially understanding so much of what was going on
in my shot , thank you very much for placing it # 2

you are right , the picture shows what was part of a much bigger job
it was massive work being done on the path to the lighthouse in DunLaoghaire Harbour ( County Dublin) bringing the lighthouse 'up to date' in this modern age

if it's ok I will show a few more pictures of what was happening , I think you will be interested
it looked fairly dangerous (to me) in places along the path, as the men were working with those machines very near the edge
it's a beautiful area which is also very close to the town of Dun Laoghaire

Winners

First place: Terrywoodenpic
Second place: marie
Third place: BouttyThose pics are really wonderful. Color composition etc. It's always a treat to see all the entries.

I just have one question... I took the Seattle Monorail using... my camera is not here right now but with the highest (maximum?) pixel. I think I used "M" and I now use "S" for faster download on my computer and save more GB on my camera drive.. And then I used Photoshop to shrink with the max. 640 which this challenge requires. Just my observation, the quality of the picture is not as clear as the original one. Is my observation right? Meaning, did I reduce the pixel of the original that's why it's not as clear as the original? What's the best pixel to use?

Yes rpolitsr, that was November on my Thanksgiving vacation in Seattle. Under investigation at that time and under construction after. Yeah, just didn't get the right angle:) Here's a good view though...

Certainly a serious collision and a better angle for the small picture, but probably you need to be a registered journalist to get that point of view.

About the size of your pictures, usually it is better to shot in the higher formats even if you will shrink the picture for web posting.
A good approach (it works for me) is to do all the post processing in the full size image except sharpening, then resize, sharpen it a bit to recover the sharp edges lost in resizing and finally save for web in Photoshop.

Welcome to the challenges, and keep submitting pictures. Almost always there is something new to learn or improve and a picture posted is the ticket to fully enjoy this threads from the best seat.

ma-s finally you sent me to learn sudoku. 55 minutes to learn the rules and solve the first puzzle. I am usually interested more in the logic than in the speed for this kind of puzzles. I will always remember that it is just a game :) .

I am sorry I took the idea that others were thinking of using it  , but either way I would've loved to see how you took the picture. I tried many times to add one more level to the cards but I failed...too hard for me.

I didn’t comment enough about your second post Terry. The natural color of the wood, the veneer patterns and the finished altar are beautiful. Thanks to all for the compliments about judging. I thought “This time it will be easier”, but it wasn't. Without diminishing the previous submissions, I think the overall quality of the pictures has risen over the past challenges making judge decisions harder.

Does this mean that we are learning to shot better pictures? I think so, but at least we are learning to pick them better. :)

Comments about the submissions and new pictures related to the topic posted after the announcement of the winners are perhaps the most important part of these threads. Thanks again for the pictures and the comments.

Hey thanks John! Man I remember those trucks from some 20 years ago, when I was working as a geologist. It sure brings back memories - I believe those trucks may be of the WABCO make, and they are huge! An average sized man beside that monster would nearly as high as the center of the wheel. At the mines, these trucks are king, as they have the ultimate right of way. Drivers of lesser vehicles such as pick up trucks have to give these things a wide berth, as they can't really maneuver well and they have a hugs blind spot. I have heard that there was an instance where a pick up was run over and it was flattened, and the WABCO driver hardly felt a bump.

I have a picture of me beside one of these behemoths, but it's at my parent's house and needs to be scanned. I'll see what I can do to post it here :)
