I also have a i950, using it for 10D fotos.
Using ExifPrint works well and gives great pictures.

The effects options will give just that,. effects. They are not what to select to give you the best prints.
I am loving the i950. I liked the prints right out of the box,. but I am now also experimenting with getting my color management working. ICM Adobe1998 coilor space etc.
To get the best image quality just select the correct paper and use good paper.
PAPER IS HUGE!
If you use the wrong paper your prints can really suffer.
Canon paper is obviously perfect,. but i found that the Epson papers work very well too.

I also bought the i950 recently and haven't changed anything in the settings and it gives great quality "out of the box".
I took a set of shots with my 10D and also took some on my Pentax 6X7 and sent them to a pro lab. Color wise there is neglible difference.
Just my experience.

What image software do you use to get EXIF printing? How do you know you are getting EXIF printing? If you adjust with USM and adjust levels etc., is EXIF data then wiped out?

What paper are you using?
If you are using the Canon paper then it is a no brainer, just select the correct paper and you should get excellent prints.
If you are using another paper then you might need to play around with the settings. I know Ilford and Kodak have the correct printer settings on their websites for a variety of printers.
This will make all the difference in the world.
