Just got a new canon 10D with a Tokina AF 24-200 mm Aspherical lens. First several hundred shots were great and then suddenly the camera would not operate, showing Err 99. Taking the battery out repeatedly did not clear the problem. A day later it started to work again.
I have seen several postings on Error 99 with Sigma and a few with Canon lenses, but none with Tokina. Can any body shed any light on the 10D-Tokina combo?
Thanks

I've not heard anything,. and that Tokina lens is a new model. I would send the lens back if I were you... see if you can find another lens to try though,. any lens. Just to be sure your 10D is fine.

I bought a Digital Rebel in Nov 2004 and I have 3 lenses from my Canon Elan 7e a Canon 35-80 & a 75-300 and the last one I bought is a Tokina AF 24-200 Aspherical lens.
During the first 1400 shots never had a problem and after that (now about 2000 photos taken) only the Tokina started to give error 99 ...
Strange, very strange. I switch off and then on and maybe it works for a couple of shots and then again. Unfortunatelly, I live in Argentina and is not easy to return it back and on the other hand the lens worked very well for 1,5 years
Gopal, you are not the only one ... any help is very wellcome

This is the standard problem symptom with a number of non-Canon lenses. No mystery at all. Conventional wisdom is that it seems intermittent simply because it happens primarily when the aperture is wide open.

before you send it back, I would recommend that you clean the contacts. I had a problem when I first got my 10d, with the 28-135 IS lens and got the error 99 a couple of times during the first week. One thing that I did do and that is clean the contacts and now over a year later never had a problem.

My Tokina 287 has never "99'd." I have had that error with my Canon lenses though.

Hi
I got my 10D/canon 50mm 1.8 yesterday and fiddled with every setting I could find.
This morning I went out to shoot and got Error 99 ..... it was pretty gloomy and I had my baseball cap on.... I discovered after several attempts that the peak was stopping the flash popping up!!
This should have been "error 5" but hey ho!!

Error 99 is a general purpose error message- It means that anything could be wrong. I mostly get it when I have my camera (Canon 10D) tethered to the computer and have an ac adapter power supply and studio lighting. A problem with polarity or something. But I use both Canon lens and Tamron lens and have gotten the error with both. Have gotten it with a bad CF card. It's most likely not the lens.
