I almost exclusively always shoot sporting events, and tomorrow is the opening of our school's new athletic facility. I want to go and try something new - just simply getting shots of people having a good time. A few questions: Should I use flash? I never use flash. I will be using the 50 f/1.8. How should I approach people and ask if they would like their picture taken? I'm a pretty shy person. All of these photos will be uploaded to my internship's website.

If you want to see them having a good time, then dont approach and say 'Hey how do you want your picture taken' shoot candid.

Also, depending on light you may not need to use a flash with a nifty fifty.
(Bring it 'just in case' though)

If you want some 'posed' shots then I would walk up to a group of people (or pair) and say ''Hi guys, smile" CLICK. or "Hi guys, cheers" CLICK (depends on drink I guess)

Peter.

If you're not shooting an actual sporting event, feel free to use flash or take available light! If it is a sporting event, be aware that you could be causing distraction or visibility issue for an athlete as you flash that thing! And if you do not use flash, be aware that mercury vapor lamps with a horrid color balance are often used in gyms, so a custom color balance might be the thing to try (I haven't shot sports in gyms since decades before digital cameras and electronic color balance were invented!)

I think this time I will shoot RAW just because I won't expect 200+ exposures

Also, should I use center point focus? WOW I've been glued to sports so much I don't even know the answer to this.

Edit: I think I will just use my 28-90mm

When outputting a RAW file, what should I set the resolution at?

Take both and use the flash, but reflect the flash of a white card if you do not have some type of defusre to use with it. Most of the time you will not even have to ask if they want their photo taken Just when you see a shoot you want point your camera at them if they do not turn away take the picture. For your flash use 'P' or 'M' mode if you use 'Tv' or 'Av' the flash is set to fill mode.
