Canon 28-105mm lens question

Hello everyone: I've been reading post here for a long time but this is my first time posting a question so please bear with me.I've been shooting all kinds of photography for a while now and learn something new with every shoot.Today I noticed something with my canon lens that I have never noticed before.I took out my 20D and was attaching the lens when I noticed movement in the part of the lens that extends outward when you zoom it.I went ahead and attached it and checked the focus on an object 10 feet away.Thats when I discoverd the lens focused good untill I wiggled it then saw the image get slightly out of focus.Lately I have had several shots be slightly out of focus which has been driving me crazy.I think I have discoverd the problem but not sure if there is anything I can do about it.Can I tighten something up or is it inside the lens?Is the lens just wore out?Sorry for the long post...I know yall dont like posts.:rolleyes:

I think you mean the front part of the lens moves up/down/left/right relative to the rest? Mine does the same, it's quite a loose fit. AFAIK it's supposed to obe that way. Don't lean on it and it should work fine.

my 28-105mm doesn't do that. I've got the f/3.5-4.5 II USM version though so I don't have an extending front element when focusing. It only extends when I zoom.

Same lens, version 1. If I zoom to 105, and hold the lens body, I can shift the hood (and front of the lens) about 2mm in all directions. Might be due to a fall sometime back. Don't remember, I do know I've had it repaired once, don't know what for ;)
If you move the front, obviously the lens isn't aligned properly, so that will effect the image.

I have the same lens that is just a few months old. There is a small amount of movement, but not as much as you describe.

I've got a tiny amount of side-to-side play in the front of my 28-105/3.5-4.5 II when it's fully zoomed to 105 mm as well. Not much, maybe 1 mm. I had the same on my old copy of the lens, so I'd say that it's within the normal range for that lens. Both are good, working copies with no real issues.

Hi,

I have had the 28-105 f/3.5-f/4.5 II USM for 9 months now and I have not noticed any "play" when the lens is extended in full zoom.

I have taken lots of great photos with this lens but have "out grown" it as the lens list in my signature block indicates. I keep it as a backup lens now and seldom use it...probably will sell it one of these days.

LOL - I sold the first one I owned - only to buy one again a year later. It's a backup/lightweight lens for me as well, but it serves its purpose well.

Sold my 28-105 II not long ago. Great GP lens. ;)
