I bit the bullet and got myself one of these. It was a slight impulse buy as I've been working with all portrait length primes since I started and on a whim decided I needed a standard zoom. I took some test shots and this thing is crazy sharp at 2.8 like everyone says. I think that I made a good choice and this thread was instrumental in me making the call. Thanks for spending my money everyone!!!

You're right, you're right! I was being foolish. I've been prime crazy lately, but everyone needs a couple of zooms, especially for shooting kids, and this one can really do its job well. I'm kind of disappointed with myself for my failure of confidence in this little gem:o

It depends, if you using 5.6 or higher and flash for portraits probably not.
I like this lens on Rebel, but it shines on 5D with large appertures.

Sorry, an OT question for all 28-75 owners: If you were going to Kuba (or someplace similar). Which lens would you bring together with the Tamron (on a 5D); 17-40L or 35/1.4L? I have been thinking about it for a month now and it's driving me crazy. :) 35L is my favorite lens, but I really like the 17-40 too. I wish I could bring all three, but that'd be too heavy. We'll travel around Kuba with a group, and then we'll have 5 days for ourselves in Havanna and around. I'm leaning towards 17-40 + 28-75 for practical reasons, but...

I also started out when there was no other option. My first SLR was bought in '72.

My eyes are actually better now but, even with a FF (5DII) I miss as often as I hit, even with older MF lenses, so I don't bother. The AF lenses, because of their lack of focus travel are way too touchy, imo.

What I normally shoot can't afford as many misses as hits or fiddling with a focus ring. If I do use MF, it's on a tripod and Liveview.

According to one thread here at POTN, the Katzeye focusing lenses are actually cannibalized from old manual cameras, and that's why they are so expensive and frequently out of stock.

yes. if you are using firefox you can install an EXIF viewer add-in. the only problem is that some photo hosting sites (flickr) block access to the EXIF info, but you can click on those pictures and get the EXIF info from the user's flickr account.

I finally got to take my new (used) lens out this afternoon. These were taken in the middle of the afternoon. I still need to figure out the processing with the 28-75 as it seems to generate a slightly different color than my Canon lenses. Super sharp lens, though. I like it a lot.

3 shot HDR from 3.5 seconds to 30 second long exposures. Its not quite as clean as I'd like it because I was standing on a bridge at rush hour and there was some flex in the bridge as the cars were traveling over it. (people probably thought I was a jumper but the sunset was pretty awesome)

That's exactly what I did, I felt that it was great for portrait work and if I needed wider I bought a 10-22. The fact that you get a bit more reach from this lens and it is just do sharp essentially made it a no brainer. It's glued to the camera with the rate exception of when I need something faster for low light or wider for landscape.

i am having some serious calibration issues guys. can you guys tell me if you can blatently tell there are blue jeans under her head? I tried to go in with the history brush and darken them so it wasn't so noticeable. right now i am using my lcd tv as my monitor i edit on. on it, everything looks great. on my laptop monitor, it looks like i did nothing to the jeans!

ah, pardon me, i meant under her hand. i tried to darken the "grain" of the blue jeans out so it wasn't so obvious the jeans where there. on my tv, they were almost not even blue anymore. i'm just trying to figure out why i'm not getting the look i'm looking for

Unless you have your monitor properly calibrated, I use the fairly inexpensive Pantone Huey, then you can never be sure what you see is what you are actually going to get. Of course if you do calibrate your monitor, people on uncalibrated monitors may see something completely different, but at least those on calibrated monitors will see the right version.

And by the way, I see it as a dark blue, definitely jeans!

I certainly see it as jeans, but not particularly as someone's leg. She could easily be resting on a pair of jeans laid out on a bed, say. I honestly don't see it as a concern.

Dying to get my 24-70L back.. The keeper rate with this lens is dismal (ie shots from a train in Tibet which I know the Canon would have handled like a champ, and this lens failed to get even one in focus).
