For me, it was a decentered element. I believe that is also your issue. If the outer elements are clean, and the issue doesn't occur on other lenses, then it is most likely the lens' internal components which are at fault.

A possible way of confirming this would be to manually adjust the focus and see if you can sharpen the soft side...and watch what happens to the other parts of the image which were sharp before. Following the process, see if they gradually get softer as the one part gets sharper, or, if all parts are sharp at some point, which side/area gets soft first. It was my experience that the right side would get sharper as the left and center would blur, and the right side didn't have nearly the same depth of field as the left and center did.

I believe that Tamron has a 6-year warranty for all their lenses, but if you didn't buy the lens new or have the receipt/etc, then that could be a problem.

Unlike all the other equipment I've bought, I haven't had any call to warranty my Tamron lens, so I don't know how their service is. You might call them and ask them about the issue, but I believe it's only fair that such a defect should be repaired, or else the lens replaced.

The photos seem ok regarding contrast and sharpeness but more than that it is difficult to say because we don't know if he managed to focus where he intended and they are not good photos to test for CA, etc...

IMO those photos are not very sharp they seem a bit soft with the lens wide open, assuming the photographer focused well. I see litle to none CA though.

I think a few look nice and sharp..the Fish ones dont judge those because its hard to get a good nice razor sharp pic of a fish behind glass..especially if you are at a zoo and its low light and VERY thick glass.

The others seem to be just poor subjects to photograph to try and judge sharpness.
Are those pics taken with the specific lens you where going to buy...or are you just trying to get an idea how this lens performs in general.
This lens can give great IQ

If you buy a lens, and it's unsharp or whatever, are you out of luck, or can you send it to Tamron?

Am I worrying too much about not getting a sharp copy?

05Xrunner

you can send it to tamron...the more you worry about this..the more when you get it you are gonna go insane on trying to find its flaws and then think you got a crappy lens but you dont cause you are just trying to find its faults....buy one...use it takings pics you want and see how they look. dont go doing tests unless u find that something might really be wrong.

I have been looking for a walk around lens to replace my 17-55 kit lens for my 350D. I am very impressed with all of these photos and just placed my order with Buydig. Tamaron has a $ 30.00 rebate, so it cost me $ 319.00. An excellent price I thought.
I am hoping to be as happy with it as most of you are.
I will let you know after it arrives and I have taken some pictures with it.

I have recently purchased this lens, although I haven't had time to evaluate it properly yet, so far I am very pleased with this Len's.

I have even seen another thread where someone compares it with an L, I have never used an L so I couldn't comment, but I can say for the price this is a diamond of a lens.

As soon as I get a chance to take some pics of my favourite subjest - portraits - I shall post them here.

I think Tamron hit the jackpot with this Lens.

Question : at 2.8 would both the 50mm 1.8 and Tamron perform simliarly? I've read the 50mm performs well stopped down and if the tamron is about the same, I can save me $100 and use it towards the tamron.

Thanks for sharing the pics everyone!

I must admit i shoot RAW and these have been through C1 and have a bit of sharpening allied but thats all.
It was a shame to have got rid of that lens but it was going to become redundant once i got the 17-50 f/2.8 and Canon 24-105L f/4.0

I doubt it but apart form the extra f/ stops the 50mm has the Tamron can do anything the Canon can and more.
Having f/1.8 is a good reason to get the Canon but i feel (and this is based on owning both) too much is placed on the 50mm being sharp. yes, it is for the money but if you have a sharp lens that covers 50mm and dont need the narrow DOF then i wouldnt bother with it if it means you get to get the Tamron instead.
I found that when i got the canon i used it a lot but having 50mm wasnt the best option indoors so i got other lens's. after a while the canon just got forgotten about. i always use a flash indoors so didnt need a fast lens and to be honest i got lazy and couldnt be bothered to keep changing lens's I do have a canon 35mm f/2.0 which is also sharp (and the fastest i won now) but even that range(!) is covered by two other sharp lens's so that doesnt get used much either.
All, IMHO of course.

IMO the 50 1.8 is a great lens for the money. But for me I wish I had saved the money and used it for a flash. I have the flash now, but I could have had it sooner. The Tamron stays on my camera about 90% of the time, usually with the flash. I can keep my shots at or below ISO400 and my aperture varies between f/2.8 and f/5.6.

Thanks for the opinion. I have my list of things I need to buy (money pending...heh) and a flash is high on the list.

Is that picture with the child using the onboard flash or your 430ex?

430EX. After getting the 430 I have NEVER used the onboard again. I didn't like the results I got when I did use it either.

Guys excellent photos. Geee so sharp. I have also posted on other threads as to which lens to get to subtitute my standard lens in my canon 350D. I was thinking of the Tamron 28-75mm but then saw the Tamron 17-50mm and now I am so so confused not knowing which one to get. As mentioned above photos for 28-75 are absolutely colourful, sharp and brilliant. I know some people have told me the 28-75 is excellent. Some final advise would come in handy as to which one to go for. Thanks.

After having both i would say quality is the same but i much prefer the 28-75 for the extra reach.

Hey guys! I'm new to these forums and just purchased this Tamron lens after reading all the stellar reviews. However, I believe I received a "bad copy" of the lens. This is a picture I took on my Digital Rebel XT. While it looked great through the lens, this is what I got when I loaded it onto my computer, as well as every other image. The edges are soft and the colors seem to bleed into each other. I had a UV filter and the lens hood on. Would this be a bad copy?

What camera are you using and have you tried other lens's on it, are the images ok with other lens's?

Do you have another camera to try this lens on, if so what the results?

Can you show exif imformation with the bad images.

I am using the lens on my Canon Digital Rebel XT. My Canon 70-200mm L lens works fine, as does the kit lens (well, as good as that one works). I don't have another camera to test it on, but i tried it again right now and it's doing the same thing. The pictures look GREAT when I look through the viewfinder, but when they are previewed, they are blurry and out of focus as the flower picture I posted up there, and the edges of all contrasting colors are blurry.
Picture Info:
Shutter Speed: 1/100
Aperature: 2.8
iso: 100
Metering: Pattern

And yes, I tried the lens with both the UV filter on and off. The quality was the same.

Are you using the lens at the 75mm end, if so at a shutter speed of 1/100 its possible that you are moving, when pressing the shutter.

I would personally mount the camera on a tripod, if you have one and fire off some test shots and/or shoot some shots at a higher shutter speed, raising the iso if necesarry. Hopefully then you will find out then if you have a bad copy or whether it may be your technique with this lens.
Dont trust the preview screen on the camera too much.

My parent's dog geting her moment of fame.

This picture was extracted from the RAW file by Canon EOS Viewer. ISO 100, f3.5 at 1/100 sec, Exif lists the focal length as 59mm

I've cropped out part of the picture, and "blushed over" the phone number on her tag using photoshop elements. No other post processing at all.

I've resized this 50% to display in the post, but 100% scale crop is available here (http://www.john-fredrickson.com/eos20d/tess.jpg)

my tamron arrived this week, tho now im having a dilemma, wether i got a "good" or a "bad" copy :)

some images as well

sure there might be mistakes from my side. there wasnt that much light and as well my hands might have moved during the shot, but i let people here decide what they think about my copy of the lens, any help will be appreciated :)
The full images look fine to me, but your crops appear to have been taken from areas that were not if focus. On the headphone shot, the area where the 3 vents are looks to be in focus the most and on your flower shot it looks like the flowers behind the area you used are more in focus.

In2Photos
19th of October 2006 (Thu), 12:48
hmm zoombrowser showed on the headphones shot that the focus point was on that place, and on the other crop the focus point was shown there as well :)
Unless you were using a tripod you could have moved slightly before actually firing the shutter. Remeber that the box (focus point) is larger than what you see. The focus point looks for contrast and if something is close to the box with more contrast than something inside the box the area with greater contrast will win.

I'm depressed reading all these reviews, I got my tammy delivered Monday past buy not had a chance to go out and try it out properly due to work commitments. Wrong shifts, dark when I leave the house and almost dark when I get home, not possible to take camera with me to work.
The one day off I had was pouring rain. Next week before I can jump in the car and try it out somewhere. I think I'll open the bottle of malt.
