Don't be afraid. :D This lens is well priced. For the money...it's a great bargain. I've had this lens for about a year and a half and it's always produced quality images for me.

Awesome Picts!!

I am sold. Next pay check and after I sell all my fishing gear I am bringing this baby home!

Since money is tight is this a good "kit" for taking to Africa?:

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and the Sigma 70-300mm APO

Maybe if I get more for my fishing stuff than expected I may be able to get a 1.4x or 2x TC.

I think I'm way off base here... Is this quality coming from this lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=284399&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

It's hard to believe such a cheap lens has such great quality. Only downside is it isn't white ;-) and the lens extends as you zoom... I hate that. So ugly

xzombiex

Sure it lacks on the telephoto end for the zoo but with some cropping it puts out great images.

Wow some great shots in here on the last few pages. I like to stop in to this huge archive every once in awhile since I used to own this lens. Very sharp, very colorful. Special mention goes to Skweekie! Loved the results from this lens but it was the wrong range for me at the time. I just picked up the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 so I'll soon see how it stacks up.

Glenn

To me doesn't make a difference really, though I have never owned an IS lens either currently out of my budget, so cannot comment either. All I can say is I am quite happy with the quality of my Tammy photos. Sharp and Vibrant at all apertures.

As to not having the steadiest of hands I suggest you get a good tripod like the Manfrotto, Gitzo or Slik and that would do the job.

Also check the f/2.8 aperture if you do get yourself this lens. If you are lucky you will get a sharp lens at f/2.8 if not you will have to send it for recalibration to Tamron as I did. Having said this I must say it came back super sharp at f/2.8. All I can say is its an excellent lens with great reviews for its price.:). Nothing to envy against it's Canon counterpart.

Regards

Joe

P.S Welcome to the forums.

Man, with all the reading I have done in my search for my next lens, I can't believe I never looked at this thread! I have changed my mind a gajillion times on what to get next from the Sigma 18-200 OS to the 24-105L to the Tammy and Sigma 17/18-50, to the 70-200L. Looking at this thread has pretty much finally sold me on this lens. Most of my shots (I currently have the kit and the nifty 50) are in the 24-55 range (probably 25% or more at 55mm) Looking at these shots I got to thinking, why replace the kit when I can keep it around and use this range to supplement it as a walkaround. If I need wider angle (landscapes or scenery shots) I can pull out the kit which is (in my case at least) amazingly sharp stopped down (and most landscape shots are stopped down anyway). I can get this as my main walkaround which will give me a bit more reach (which I am dying for), better low-light performance, and when I eventually get the 70-200 f4L, it will match perfectly and can even share filters! Anyone wanna try and talk me out of it?.... my finger is on the checkout button. Oh, and for those of you that have one, how is Tamron service (I know I may have to send it for recalibration and stuff).

Hi Vic,

I went through the same thinking your doing now. I had the kit lens, 50mm 1.8 and the 70-200 F4. Never really had good results with the kit lens. Was thinking it was me and not the lens. Decided to get the Tamron 28-75 since I always wished I had more reach on the kit lens. Always can pull the kit lens out for wide angle. VERY good choice for me. I love this lens. My keeper rate has gone way up. The sharpness of this lens is great.

Enjoy it and post photos when you get it.

Thanks,
Brad

I just bought my 20D not too long ago, and I faced the "what-lens-should-i-get-omg" problem too. After reading alot of reviews, I decided to get this lens, rather than buy a 20D with the kit lens.

I'm very happy with the lens ... it takes pictures that are razor sharp, and the 28-75mm range works very well for me and the photos that I take.

Here's a few:

For those of you who are using this lens with the 5D and also use the 85 1.8 how do you feel they compare? To me even at F 2.2- 2.5 the 85 1.8 seems so much sharper then the 28-75 at F-4.

I mainly got the Tammy for limited use when I need a little more flexiblity then when the 85 1.8 and 50mm 1.4. and admit I could be expecting to much from it as even the 24-70L seems soft at F-4 compared to the 85 1.8 at 2.5

I use both on the 5D. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, even with FF I don't get to use the 85mm as much as I would like to. However, so far I would say mine are about equal. I love both, an earlier thread (April) with shots from both, maybe not a great example, all were shot at f4. (Edit - 1st 2 were the Tamron the 3rd the 85mm)

Hey buddy, you take good photos. I'm amazed. If you find the 17-55 a bit of a stretch, you might even want to consider the Tammy 17-50. It seems like you were doing fine without the IS. :D A Tammy 17-50 and a 30/1.4 would be a stellar lineup for you.

My copy of tamron is softest at 75 2.8. still very good, but cant really compete with 85. However, it is used far more frequently than the 85. I used the lens for portraits, and on 5d, I fin75 f4 is sharp as I ever want a portrait lens to be.
