Now that's odd.. I've checked my photos that we're taken at f5.6 they're sharp. Try shooting it again with enough light. I'm guessing you want to see the sharp details in the eye especially the eye lashes

THAT LOOKS WAY SOFT FOR 5.6
Yeah I agree slowdad.. At F/5.6 with this lens it would be sharp enough to shave with,,even at F/2.8 it would be sharper..
Looks like misfocus or focus and recompose..

Another example, and 100% crop, with the 400d. Shot at 59mm, ISO100, f4.5, 1/200. Converted directly from RAW with no PP applied whatsoever.

And another one, also with the 400d, this time at 75mm (showing part of the macro capability). ISO100, f4.5, 1/2500. No PP.

god...i must be the real blond then)))))
this Tamron is a nice lens. I shoot my own portraits with it. I guess I need to get the prime for it, as I dont use the zoom on my 28-75 at all.
This lens is nice and is capable of producing great image, with users help of course. ;)
Instead of already looking into get other lenses why not learn the basic's of the equipment you have now?
For example: Buying a 50mm f/1.2 L wont give you better images if you don't know how to use it.

Trust me the 30D and 28-75 you have is plenty capable. Do plenty of reading, practicing and posting, it takes time so bear with it.
To get this thread back on topic here is another one. 30D - Tamron 28-75 @ f/32 - 4 sec. exposure - lit by flashlight....

I finally got my Tam back from a tune up (8 1/2 weeks later). I realize this photo is completely undesirable....the lighting, etc. I was messing around with different f stops etc to check on sharpness........what the hell is going on here in this pic? The focus point is dead center on the top of the candle, and look where the sharpest point of the photo is! I couldnt get the focus point to save for some reason....but trust me, the red dot was dead center. I dont know what to make of it......I dont have focusing issues with my other lens' on this body (40D)

I know it should have been on a tripod, Im gonna set it up and do a lenstestchart.com test later. But even without a tripod....if there was the slightest bit of movement, wouldnt there be motion in the shot? My main point was the focus point is on the center, but the only thing tack sharp is the lower left....
Dorman
22nd of March 2009 (Sun), 13:31
I wouldn't say anything in the photo is tack sharp. You may have been quite steady but there's no way at 30mm and 1/8th of a second that you're steady enough to judge the sharpness of the lens. Try it on a tripod or get out and do some real world shooting to test the lens.

Great shot. :) I love this lens' bokeh. It reminds me of a prime more than almost any other zoom.
It's a very versatile, fast zoom that seems to have little sample variation.

It was recommended to me by guys whose work I adore as a great normal 2.8 zoom on FF (5D), and I couldn't agree more. It's very sharp, it focuses fast and accurately, and the colors and contrast are very nice.

Maybe take some "real world" pictures so that they can be assessed rather than cartons and till receipts. Post the 100% crops as well as exif to give us as much info as poss.
Also, you may find that others will comment more freely if you upload the photos directly on this site rather than using a link.

Beautiful shots pridash.
This lens does a really weird thing in macros (and it will focus very close to the front element) where everything is soft and dreamy, but a very thin plane is in focus. Not bokeh, but more like applying a diffuse glow filter.
It works sometimes; most times not. It has Macro in its name, but it's not a true macro lens.

It's amazing, I took pretty much the same shot with my 100mm macro as a comparison and it was pretty much the same for bokeh! The only difference was that the 100mm was sharper. The Tammy will do for a macro in a pinch!

Probably best to post that question in the Lens thread rather than the samples thread.
You may also want to give more info on what you like to shoot, whether you have crop or full frame cam and your budget. Then you'll get more constructive opinions suited to your needs.
However, as regards the Tammy, it's a wonderful lens! Can't seem to put it down at the mo!

I traded my first 28-75 for a 28-135. It was a nice lens, but not as sharp or versatile. Sold the 28-135 and bought another 28-75.

Thanks a lot for the insight on what to give you guys.
Im shooting on a Rebel Xsi, with its kit lense 18-55is, so crop it is. I range in my shooting from landscape to portrait. Rarely if ever do i shoot at night so the concern on its difficulty to find focus in low light is not an issue for me. The closest i will get to shoot in difficult lighting would be dusk at best.
Im not really looking into super zooms at all. I was first looking into the 28-135 as a versatile walk around lense, however once i began to do further research i stumbled upon multiple reviews raving about this tammy. My price range is 500.
Only reason i posted this question here is because ive seen a lot of you guys owned both of the lenses so i figured who better to critique as seeing you have experience with them.

Well if you don't need the extra range, you really can't go wrong with the Tamron. However, do make sure you keep the 18-55 for when you need the wider focal length.

Thanks a lot Pridash, im already looking at the tokina 12-24 to cover the wider length at which point i might discard the 18-55 or just keep it as a back up.
Im very excited for the tamron. The pictures on this thread are fantastic. Ive noticed that it doesnt have IS but that shouldnt be an issue shooting at 1/30 and since the lenght is up to 75, IS really shouldnt be a deal breaker here.
Usually my grip in this dicision is image quality over everything. So far from what ive seen the tamron tops the canon 28-135 when it comes to this. The 28 is softer from what ive seen. I just hope i get a good copy of the 28-75 since that seems to be the biggest problem with this lense.

I am on another forum where quite a few people have this lens and several of them claim that it is not very sharp if you're more than about 7 feet away from your subject. This sounds strange to me & I was wondering if anybody here has found this to be true? I'm quite interested in this lens, but not if I have to be right on top of my subject! That can't be right, can it?

Since I have it, I use it may be 80% of the time. It is a recognized sharp, sharp lens on crop cameras (on full frame, corners suffer a bit). Reviews indicate that it is indeed equal or sharper than the EF24-70 f2.8L, at a third of the cost!
Example taken with the XTi, at 75mm, ISO200, f5, 1/2000.

Photos being soft at over 7 feet away could be due to all sorts of reasons - camera shake due to low shutter speed or some other operator error. As paparios says, it's just as good (optically) if not better than the 24-70L.

I don't have this lens so I cannot comment on this particular lens. However, wide angle lenses usually compensate for edge distortion especially when focused up close. It's a compromise between sharpness and distortion. Designed for a full-frame camera, the 28-75 is fairly wide at the 28 end. Could this be the reason? I don't know.

eta: I just went back to that other forum & there was a new post from someone who just got this lens. There are already 3 posts from 3 different people warning her that it doesn't focus well from more than 7-10 feet. But they love it when they're close to their subject! And this is a small forum ... there are probably only about 30-40 people who post regularly.
But don't worry. I trust you guys! But now you can probably tell why I just had to ask! :)

Heh, I shot the shot below yesterday. Can't do a 100% crop right now, but it certainly works for me - even so it's at f/2.8. The funny (to me) part is that the focus point ended up barely on the edge of the back of his jersey and the camera still managed to focus on the player and not the background.
I have absolutely no complaints about this lens even at larger distances. It's quickly becoming my favourite lens in the lineup.

I’m sure the climate variables along Montana’s Hi-Line are not unique, but it is amusing how suddenly and unexpectedly it can go from shorts and t-shirts weather to snow suit weather.
It’s snowing (obviously), 31 degrees, winds gusting up to 40 MPH, and a wind-chill of 17. The predicted high for the day is 54, but I sort of doubt it.
No editing with either image. The Tamron shot was taken through my windshield, between wipes, as I wasn't interested in getting wet and melting.

Well it clearly looks blurred to me. As you mentioned the time was correct (1/400 and shorter), that could mean something is not working well.
Have you tried to focus on manual (that is, put in OFF the switch on the lens)?. With the XSi you could also check if the Liveview mode gets the camera to focus.

I advise you to do some test with manual focus (this just to better diagnose the possible fault). If, with manual focus, your pictures follow to be blurred, then something within the lens is loose or misaligned.
Even with long times your shots should be nothing like your examples. For instance the following example and 100% crop was taken with the XTi at 75mm, ISO100, f5.6, 1/80 (meaning it could have shown movement blur).

It works great on a full frame. My post on the previous page was with a 5D:

On a full frame you can see a little of the softness in the corners people talk about. You won't of course see that on a cropper. But just stop down one stop and that is gone!
