I just bought this lens on eBay for $195. Here is a test photo i took. Not the best lighting conditions so i'm at 1600 iso and 1/50 shutter speed. :/

Here's the jpg straight of the camera.
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/7128/img2427resize.jpg

100% crop. You can see the noise here, but its not too bad.
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/8286/img2427crop.jpg

At 1/50 of a second i probably caused some camera shake. Following the 1/focal length rule, i should've at least had 1/100. Here are the settings:
ISO 1600
f/2.8
75mm
1/50s

I don't know.. What do you guys think? Sharp or not? I'll probably do some tripod testing in some more controlled conditions later.

Yaamon
31st of May 2009 (Sun), 23:44
Can't really say with that photo, but it looks like the focus might be slighty off. The lamp frame edges going towards the back look sharper.

Hard to say as where the camera actually focused on. With the high iso and slow shutter speed and wide open I would say overall looks good.

But I can definately say you got a great deal on the lens. :)

Enjoy.

This was just a quick test today I took. Taken with a 50D at f2.8 50mm. Do you think it's a sharp copy as got it on sale from a retailer in England (well I have 7 days to decide to keep it or not!)

Thanks people!

Take more photos at different focal lengths and real world subjects, do a 100% crop on the focal point to check the sharpness and whether it focusing on the right point - if you're happy with it then go out and enjoy the lens!

Thanks! Actually this was one of my very first shots with a new Alien Bee strobe light that I got for Father's Day. For this image I was using a small umbrella reflector that I had. What made matters worse was that the humidity level in Florida over the weekend was like 150% and so everyone had a thin layer of perspiration when they came inside. This particular shot was pruely an impromptu photo and so it needs work. After my friends left I experimented with bouncing the light off my ceiling and it improved the shadows and glare on the faces. Wish I had them there try a reshoot.

You know, what impressed me the most about this photo was how well the Tammy lens performed. It continues to surprise me and is very capable lens.

On another note, just read an article in a UK mag (Digital SLR Photography) on Chris Borgman (http://www.chrisborgman.com/) - absolutely amazing photographer! Guess what lens he uses the most? Yep - the humble Tamron 28-75!

Just got this lens, definitely have a sharp copy.. Not too pleased with the autofocus performance but it is much warmer/sharper/brighter than the 18-55 IS kit lens in side by sides... Here is a crop at 100 percent, both lens's set to f/8 - aperture priority.

My kit lens isn't too bad at all...infact quite good at times, but after picking up this lens I've only used the kit once - only because 28mm wasn't wide enough!

Glad you got a sharp copy, like many of us as well!

To to the owners: how does this compare (if its even supposed to) to the Sigma 24-70 or Canon 24-70 (the Canon being my biggest concern).

The prices difference is amazing and this lens looks absolutely stellar. Argh, so many options!!

The Tamron is considered only slightly behind or sometimes even with the Canon L counterpart. I chose it because it compares well to the L lens and is about a third of the price.
As for the Sigma, there are two of them that I know. And the 2.8 version is supposed to be a good lens. But I never researched it, so I am pretty ignorant of that one.

I'm with HoosierJoe here. what difference does it make how old the review is? Any comparisons still hold true.

You're right; there is a comparitive study somewhere that I remember. But it escapes me where it is at.

Here is a review. As is well known, it talks about the center sharpness which is great. The lens has softness on edges but you won't see that on an amateur camera:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-28-75mm-f-2.8-XR-Di-Lens-Review.aspx

I don't know what you shoot with.

Maybe this is it:
http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/49/cat/23

There is a paragraph describing it against the Canon 24-70L. But again I think this guy tests with an amateur camera (20D?) not a full frame.

I am totally confused. I have this lens mounted on a Canon 20d and at 2.8 sometimes it renders exceptionally sharp images and sometimes they are really soft. I use the center focus point and recompose. Is this lens sharper when you manual focus? It just seems like it is hit and miss with this lens. No consistency in image quality.

I "HAD" the same problem.. prob due to blur or dof.. once i stepped down to F3.something - F4 its sharp... Very sharp.. will try to post later/tomorrow. but i maintained 1/160 up at the very least 1/125.

There's your problem. At 2.8 if you focus/recompose you're more likely to get focus errors. Always try to use the AF point nearest to your subject that you want in focus.

I agree. If it is hit or miss then it is user error. An OOF lens will always be OOF.

I'm going to say no, it is not worth it for you. You have the best portrait ranges of the 28-75 covered with your 50mm and 60mm prime lenses. At wide angle, 28mm f2.8 is not really any better than your kit lens at 28mm f4 with IS.
