I'm going to say no, it is not worth it for you. You have the best portrait ranges of the 28-75 covered with your 50mm and 60mm prime lenses. At wide angle, 28mm f2.8 is not really any better than your kit lens at 28mm f4 with IS.
ok thanks! i am just learning...and every time i open up a thread with someone using a lens that i don't have...i so think i need it....lol...because i am so fascinating by their results...i need to learn more before i spend more money i guess...thank you for you input!

A handsome lens, for sure!! I recently sold a 24-70L to pick up a 35L and this lens, and I must say, I am 120% satisfied. ;)
How recently was that? Your samples were shot a year ago (according to their EXIF that is).

After much consideration.. I have chosen for this to be my next lens.. was a toss up between this and the Canon 28 f/1.8 but chose this as it filled the gap I have well and has proven to be a good all rounder. Keep posting guys!

xxmxaxrxyxx,
this is a very good glass for its price.
but if you want better for more than 2x the price 17-55 2.8 is is the way to go.
If you have primes that cover the range good, but remember that its way easier to use zooms.

Pleasing results on the 1.3x crop 1D Classic.
Nice!
Never thought about what a great range this would be on a 1.3x - 36-100 equivalent. That is pretty much what most 3x zoom pocket cams are.

Thanks.
It is indeed an more usable range on the 1.3 crop IMO and one that I am more used to coming from P&S film bodies as a kid at about 35mm wide and then 50mm primes on my Vivitar SLR body. I've used it on the 1D Classic intensively for the last four days and there is little I couldnt do with it for what I was shooting.

Last night, while driving south of the Montana ghost town of Wagner, I stopped on the tracks and snapped this photo out my window. My literal one-second pause on the tracks caused great distress to my children, who accused me of wanting to get them all killed.
Sometimes you just have to take what's presented, regardless of the settings on your camera and hope your camera and lens performs as you hope.

"You must hate your children"
Of course. They (the three who were with me at the time) were all eating DQ Blizzards and giving me a hard time over "when are we going home Dad?!".
They also didn't appreciate it when I told them I thought I had at least ten seconds if/when the crossing arms started coming down.
The above train, BTW, was parked and waiting for another one coming from the opposite direction. The other train didn't show up for about ten minutes.
I may take another drive out there a bit earlier tonight, to see if a parked train is a nighly occurence.

Good job. The primary job of a father is to scare, tease, and annoy the hell out of his kids to toughen them up for the real world! :)

I'm going to get this lens in the next week or two from B&H, it's about AU$300 cheaper than what you can get it for here! Just need to get in touch with a guy who wanted my Canon 24/2.8 and sell my nifty fifty to a mate and I'll be good to go.

I found shooting wide open at F/2.8 with my Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 on my 50D the images are very soft,,unusable in fact..They only start to sharped up at around F/4..I've never noticed this with my 20D or my 350D for that matter.. Any explainations??
I'm going to do some more tests..I'll keep you posted..

^ Edit,,I just shot a quick test..
First image 20D, second image 50D.. Both images manually focused and straight out of the camera at F/2.8 @ 75mm,, only resized.. Shot in Jpeg without camera sharpening..
Probably not a conclusive test but a start..
OK,,now looking at it, it appears the 50D is a tad sharper..
Need to do some more tests..

Have you put in some microadjustment at all? The 50D shot does look better but it can't hurt to have a go.

Micro adjustment will only work when using auto focus.. These were focused manually..

The black is definately richer and darker in the 50D image. Sharpness is a tough call but I'd say the 50D takes it.

I agree.. If you check the EXIF on both images you'll find the 20D pic was shot at 400th sec @F/2.8 and the 50D at 500th sec @ F/2.8,,giving deeper blacks..Not thinking, I was more concerned with sharpness as opposed to exposure..
I must remember to do a more controlled test..

Nice portraits - really sharp too!
But you may want to drop the saturation a touch - seems a bit too much on my monitor.

I used Portraiture on a seperate layer and then dropped the opacity to 85% because it was too strong at 100% IMHO. Do you think it needs to be pulled back some more?

Maybe it isn't the saturation then, but something needs to be toned down - maybe the sharpening? Sorry I don't mean to critisize your photos unnecessarily! But hopefully, it's helpful comments ;)

Very helpful and not taken as criticism. I've struggled a bit with color saturation ever since I started using Portraiture. I like what it does to the skin tones but it can really render the reds over-saturated. I'm still learning the ins and outs of that plug-in.

Me either. I understand why people use that and other things to make their subjects look "better". Because that's what the customer wants.
But, I don't charge for what I do so I can get away with it. I prefer that people look how they look, blemishes and all.

Center focus and recomposing. The kids were not the most cooperative and moving around everywhere. The problem with the XSi is you can't easily change focus points unfortunately.

Thank you..
I metered for the sky in AV.. Then used the settings in M...
I had a 430exii on camera, with a FEC of -2/3.. For Fill
Once your sky is metered, you'll just have to adjust your FEC, till you get the exposure correct on the subject.. I think it took a 2-3 shots

Ok this might sound incredibly noobish but how exactly do you meter for the sky? and I have found on my flash that I can only get an FEC of -2/3 in ettl mode.. I Obviously need to practice more with flash lol. also did you have any diffuser on your flash head?..
Thanks Alot for the help :)

Let me get that...
He was in AV mode.
Then he pointed it to the sky.
So you got the Apeture right? Since you set it...
when you point it to the sky the camera will tell you what shutter speed it will use for proper exp.
Keeping that in mind ...
He put the cam to Manual.
Put the metered ( apeture and S.speed he got when he "METERED" the sky for proper exp )
the he used his 430exii on camera, with a FEC of -2/3. FEC = Flash exposure compensation

Surprisingly good! I shot a bellydance event the other week, which had absolutely terrible lighting and still got tons of usable shots, in fact only a few had misfocus. However, I must admit I had the 580ex on cam (set not to fire) to aid the focusing.
These are a few of the shots (softer on here for some reason - probably Flickr's fault). I had to shoot wide open and ISO 1600, although I should have used ISO 3200 since I had ended up pushing the exposure in Photoshop anyway.

Had this lens for a couple of months now and really like it but not sure if i'd have been better of with the wider 17-50. These shots (girlfriend and son) where taken on a recent short break..
Plz forgive the borders, i just resized them from my final prints.

It just arrived today. The reverse turn to zoom is screwing with my head, but I think I'll get used to it. :) I think I'm going to like this lens.

...and believe it or not here is the shot she herself took of my wife...ok I set it for her and done the processing, but still...! See even this lens can be used by 11 year olds with great results - the eyes were tack sharp!

thanks! like muusers said: this is Utrecht, Holland. My hometown too, I actually prefer it over Amsterdam - the Oudegracht canal looks great by night.
Next time I'll go out for a shoot with tripod.
