I'm going to a rock event and I'm not decided what would be the best lens for this occation.. I have the Tamron SP 28-75mm f/2.8 and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 MKII for this occations but the Tamron is 28mm so I can get wide range and the Canon is 1.8 so I can shoot on low light... If I can only have both features in one lens.... jajaja

The short answer is that it really depends on what you consider "macro" and how you plan to use it. It is no substitute for a true macro lens but it does allow you to get pretty close. If you want to photograph small jewelry or insects this is not the lens for you. It is an outstanding lens for general use. It does work quite well with extension tubes if you really want to get closer macro.

Thanks, Mark. I really loved the results I got from this lens for insect close-up work. I probably won't use it as much this summer, though, since I got the Canon 100mm macro this afternoon. :) Still, it's a great all purpose walk-around lens. I never shoot wide, so it works well for me.

I think the non-variety has been discontinued, hasn't it? Either way, you want the one thats XR DI LD Macro, yadda yadda yadda.
The funny thing was that I found my 24-70L has a greater magnification at 70mm than the tamron at 75mm. The tamron was somewhat sharper though. I liked that it could be stopped down to f/32, but with a crop sensor, diffraction is going to take away from the benefits. I'm staying with the canon for better sharpness at the edges when I get a film body. The tamron has a warmer tone too, which some might like. Somewhat like a built in warming filter. I liked the larger magnification for macro purposes, so I'm going to stay with the canon for now. But if one plans to stay digital and on a crop sensor, the tamron is a great lens!

That will start to bug me now.

05Xrunner
30th of May 2006 (Tue), 14:31
maybe that wasnt the lens fault. Maybe that left hand side leg was staggard back just far enough to kinda start making it go a tad oof. I am sure the image would still look great printed though
HarryPotter
30th of May 2006 (Tue), 14:51
Possibly, but that was at F8, ISO200, shutter speed of 1/800 and a 30mm Focal Length. I would have thought the DOF high enough for this - I may be wrong as I am still learning and the dish is a fair size (actually it's huge).
I have seen hints of this error on other shots before, but never so pronounced as on this shot (due to the straight lines) - it's the main dish at Jodrell Bank in the UK, BTW.
I also took a similar picture with a 50mm F1.8 Prime (I just moved back a bit to get it in the shot - well, about 200 feet) and there is no evidence of this aberration in the image with the prime, in fact it's detail city.
Please don't tell me the cure is L class glass, because I can't afford.

Just for kicks, same test as above but with a smaller battery.
I've found it to be very sharp ;)

Great shots everyone! Great thread too ... I just bought one of these last night, (I was looking for an "L") couldn't resist the price :)
Hopefully I'll learn to take pictures just as good as you all have!

one thing i've noticed is that this lens seems to favor the colour red.

I have this picture taken with my 28-75 but I suspect the quality isn't quite as good as it could be so any comments would be appreciated. Im thinking around the edge of the bottle, things don't look that sharp, and around the neck on the left is a creamy white 'halo' which doesn't look right...
I've had the lens for probably 9months or so but have never really bothered to closely examine the pics untill seeing some of the stuff on here!

I'll try and upload a better image soon but my connection keeps crashing when I try and upload anything big.

Pixel peeping at your photo I see evidence of something that migh be motion artifact, and looking at your image data it says shutter speed with 1/3...a very slow speed. Perhaps you hand held the camera rather than using a tripod???

Shot using a tripod and self timer.
original version of the pic below - no post processing but I think it was shot on parameter 1 which is +1 sharpness and +1 contrast.

How the heck were you able to post that full sized image? Anything over 100 kbs stops me from posting. Nice shot though :-)

Dunno, just linked to the site where I've hosted it! So you reckon it looks ok? I'm still wondering about the sharpness around the edges of the bottle......

It seems as if the camera is front focused a bit in that shot. If you look at the floor which the bottle is resting on, it seems sharpest in front of the bottles label, and the label itself is a bit out of focus, so that merely makes the edges of the bottle even more out of focus.

Uploading to POTN will stop you from anything over 100kb. If you link it from your site or another you can make it any size. But the 800x800 rule still applies so if you dont want to get yelled at by a mod canned_heat I would suggest pulling the full size picture off or resizing it. People get annoyed when they have to scroll that much(myself included) and if a poor 56k'r opens this page their computer would have a heart attack.

Two more taken yeterday from the front seat of a moving car.
the second one isnt a crop, i just used the zoom.
No PP done apart from developing in C1. This lens is just soooo sharp.
It will be a shame to get rid of this lens but i now have my sights set on a Canon 24-105 L IS.

Well, it looks like I need to get that lens. Is it the 28-75 f/2.8 Di XR? Do they make any other goodies? I'm looking for a longer focal length zoom for outdoor portraits.

Yes it is. I think the 28-75 f/2.8 is their jewel in the crown. its the lens that gets the most praise.
One of the reasons im getting rid of it is i also want a longer reach. im used to my Canon 28-105 USM and really miss the extra 30mm i get with that.
thats why im going for the 24-105L but its a lot of money.

Thanks James
For a lot of my gallery shots i apply a plugin called Focalblade once i have resized the pic for web (or print) but just recently and since i got my Tamron i havent really used it.
C1 is a RAW convertor and has a basic sharpen facility in it (not as good as USM or even Rawshooter) and i just set it in the middle of the slider but really its the lens and good lighting that makes the shots sharp.
I like your waterful pic. nice smooth waterfall but not fluffy
I took the liberty of applying a little bit of PP to your shot. just a bit of LCE and focalblade. brings out the detail a bit more. hope you like it

Here's one from me. ISO 800, f5.6 (sharper than it is wide open), 1/100 sec, flash with FEC down a stop.
A bit grainy because of the ISO and low light, but quite striking considering is was fairly impromptu and unplanned (the photo that is, not the baby!)

Contact lenses. Look around the iris just a bit and you can see where they stop.

Chosen crop point was to show detail picked up from contact lens. I think this shows plenty as you can see each tiny colored block in the contact lens. That and the eyebrow was a bit OOF as focus point was the right corner of the eye.

I would say yes but ive only ever used my one copy.
I think its normal for a lot of lens's to be soft wide open but i cant say by how much. im also sure you will hear from people that say they have a copy that is sharp wide open
If you can live with it, aybe sharpen it up in PP then i wouldnt worry about it too much. as long as its only "a tad" though.
IMOH of course.

Yeah, i know what you mean. i tend now to not worry about it too much and if i do get a bad shot (and i do a lot of the time) i put it down to me not the lens.
I think once you get used to the lens youll forget about it and just enjoy it and trust it.
Of course if you could post one of your soft shots maybe someone will comment if its good enough or not but at f/2.8 mine is a bit softer as well.

Unfortunately I am not very impressed with this lens, specialy when I compare it with the 50mm f/1.8 in terms of sharpness, colors and contrast.
But maybe I just need to use it more.

Mine is sharper, has better color, and contrast from 28-49mm and from 51-75mm. ;) At 50mm my 50 1.8 is sharper but the colors and contrast are about equal.

Well ive pretty much been shooting with the new lens for about a week and really like the performance of the lens. I was shooting 1/8th scale off road buggies of which can move at a quick pace. As you can see the lens did a pretty decent job, will certainly be using the lens alot more. Next up will be a canon 70-200 2.8L, mmmmmmmm.

they could just look soft caus maybe not fast enough shutter speed, or he didnt track them perfectly and they are just atad OOF...Might not be the lens fault and they look way to oof to say its just being soft.

I'm sorry this may be off-topic, but HarryPotter got my attention when he posted about his lens being softer on one side than the other, and noone responded very seriously to his post.
I have, however, noticed a definate falling off of sharpness on the LHS of some of my images with this lens, using F8 or above!!!!
That will start to bug me now.
Options?
That is a very unfortunate issue, which I also ran into with my Sigma ultra-wide. 99% of the information I gathered told me it was a decentered element, and I had to send it back and get a new one from the reseller. I have to say, I've never been fully comfortable with the lens since, even though the replacement is much better.
Here's a sample of just how bad it was. (Someone in this forum actually told me that the symptoms of a decentered element usually aren't noticeable to the naked eye - I beg to differ.)

Thanks for the referral, does this mean I have a case for sending the lens back for repair / replacement?
It's a Tamron and is about 16 months old, how long are the warranties (without me going hunting) what is there service system like?
