This shot was taken last weekend in Glencoe, and I liked how the snow covered mountains were lit by the sun and set against stormy skies. :)

Lovely shot, John. We may have the best scenery in the UK, (:D ) but its still got to be captured properly.

Thanks Trevor. I presume that you're hinting about that Scottish place down south? ;)

Great shot John :)

The illumination of the snow leaves it almost looking like Icing Sugar or Talc ;)

Thanks Scottie. I must remember next time to either lick it, or powder my tootsies then.

I love this one - I have some shots of snow in Glencoe taken 2 years ago with my Olympus compact and I can't wait to get back there with my DSLR!

I'm feeling meddlesome tonight (sorry!) so I have taken the liberty of doing a bit of PP. You say 'IMAGE EDITING OK' but I will of course remove it if you don't like it. :)

I boosted the saturation a bit and the contrast a tiny bit. I hope it doesn't look artificial - that is always the risk. What do you think?

I'm pretty much a beginner with Photoshop, so I'm always interested to see how my photos could be improved. I don't think that your version looks artificial at all, and indeed it is a pretty subtle change, or at least it looks that way with the scroll up and down the browser page comparison method. :)

beautiful scene with those stormy clouds
lovely how the sun was at that moment with the soft golden glow in the gap there between the mountains,
like a welcome entrance

wild and wonderful feel to the place

it does look like icing sugar
we have a mountain called 'sugar loaf mountain ' (not too far away)
this photo makes the sugarloaf look very green

Lovely shot ,you cant beat the highlands for dramatic scenery and you captured it well.
I see we are forecast to have more snow this weekend, so if can drag myself away from the Rugby (Come on Scotland :D ) and the Grand Prix I might try some landscape photography up in Dunkeld although I'm not sure how you would handle all that white, did you use any filters/polarizers?

Thanks Scott. The only filter I was using that day was a 3-stop ND grad filter, although quite often I still saw some blowout, but never got round to adding another ND grad to stop down even further.

I have old film shots of it showing in the background John
it is about 25/30 miles away ( completely different road trip then usually took to the mountains which I show pictures of)

"Great Sugar Loaf is the 455th highest summit in Ireland. Great Sugar Loaf is the most easterly summit in the Dublin/Wicklow area."

I have not been close to the Sugarloaf for a few years
hopefully will get to the place I love which is near the mountain (Powerscourt Domain and Waterfall) ..... soon as I can..
and weather permitting

you'll see something of the mountain here in these shots
it is a beautiful sight from the wonderful grounds of this house (see url)
very lovely crafts and coffee shops there too
great place to visit

the beautiful waterfall is on further (about 3/4 miles)
I got shots of it over the years ..
what seems like an old lady in a hooded shawl is shown in the water in one of my shots where the water is cascading down.
maybe she fell over the cliff at one time:( many years ago

the sugarloaf is always in sight in the 'near ' distance when visiting these areas

Thanks Sisko.

I've briefly dabbled with some B&W conversions, and simply reducing the saturation doesn't do it for me. I've also seen some great B&W conversions on this site where far more tweaking has been involved, but I've not been able to reproduce any of my photos to this standard.

If you've got the inclination, then please feel free to see how a B&W version would look. :)

That is beautiful John! The sky nicely frames the white of the mountains. I am coming over in June/July this year and heading up to Glen Coe. It's just not the same without the snow though, that's a fantastic picture.

Please do consider uploading it to our Scottish photo gallery (http://www.scotlandone.com)... the more we have the more it promotes the beauty of the place. Plus it's free. :D

Keep em snowy mountain shots coming.

Cousin - whos wearing his ski goggles for extra effect.

I know that I'd promised previously, but when I saw the T&Cs, I couldn't be bothered reading them at the time, but I'll get round to it. :)

Har de, were the terms that scary? There's nothing in there that is different from any other photo gallery.

Here's the short version.

1: We don't own your images and they will always display your copyright.

2: They may appear on any/all of our sites, not just the one you upload to. (More free publicity for you :D ) Or in one of the page headers. (Even more free publicity :D :D )

3: They must be of UK/Ireland, 1024 pix and no more than 200kB.

That's about it. Oh... and it's free, unlimited photos and bandwidth.

No smoke and mirrors... just good ol Scottish value.

Thanks for your considerations as always.

Cuz.

Har de har,

One has to cover all eventualities, not for the sane nor sensible... but for the 1% of living organisms... who just don't get it.

Now enough of the technical talk... lets party.

Look forward to your shots John, they will be a welcome addition to the almost 1000 photos already amassed in the past 8 weeks.

John, is that Bidean nan Bian we are looking at in the centre? Lovely shot. Thanks Martin. I think that it would probably be Stob Ghabhar or an adjoining top to the slightly west of Stob Ghabhar. If you put NN308497 into the get a map bit of the Ordnance Survey (http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/) web site, then I was standing on the A82 in line with the boat house on Loch Ba and the path running west. I was also looking west. Just zoom out a little bit to see what I mean.

One other thought Martin that might help you get your bearings is to check out my Black Mount Panorama (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=144938) thread as the mountain you are asking about is slap bang in the middle of the photo. :)

Thanks John. It's a while since I climbed up in that part of the world, obviously a bit rusty at spotting the peaks. That OS website is cool though-added it to my favorites, and your Black Mount pano is excellent.
Cheers.

Thanks Martin. The OS site can be useful. When I was climbing one of the most northernly Munros, I didn't want to buy a map that would be used once. However a couple of carefully chosen sections from the OS website gave me sufficient details for my walk. ;)

Edited: :o I called you Mike by mistake.

For once, i prefer the earthy, muted tones of the original - sorry Mike Bell.

Living in London I've always thought those lovely pictures of Glencoe are a tourist set-up...to try and persuade people from London to come and visit. However, here on POTN, its finally proven to me that they are real.

....just tying my shoelaces...booking a flight... see ya soon!
