Can I use the generics and are they any good?

The problems with the generics I tried were with the seal.. they just don't have the parts correct so the latching is not as fool proof as with the Canons. I don't mind sacrificing the weather seal on occasion,. but with the ones I got there was even a possibility of it coming unlatched and thus your battery slipping and loosing connection.. :(
On the bright side,. the screw pattern for the connection bettwen battery pack and cover latch is identical,. so when the cels on my Canon batts die aI can quickly and easily swap the battery packs re-using the Canon body/latch parts.

The Black Diamons claim to have been re-worked...but I have never used them. Heck, I'm still trying to get a 1D series canera that works right...number 3 gets picked up tomorrow!

What's wrong with your 1d, Scott?

I ordered a Black diamond
and the latch is crap
locking takes a lot of effort....and feels like its going to break
I ordered a replacement cover latch from canon
cost more than the generic battery....lol
but I still get a high capacity battery at slighly lower cost than canon brand
parts should be here tomorrow

Given the cost of the 1 series bodies I don't find the cost of the Canon batteries to be too high. Personally, I won't use a generic battery in my camera. I know that the build quality on the Canon batteries in general is much better than the generics.

I posted a similar topic a week or so back. After doing a load of research, I ended up just getting a canon original. For me although some of the third party batteries have a higher capacity, when I researched, there were some issues regarding fit and weather sealing with a few manufactures.

It's been a nightmare...picked up the first one two weeks ago from what is an actualy respected local merchant, well 75 miles up the road. Even with sales tax it was a few $ cheaper than BH. Got it home...image serial numbers start in the 700's and, what's this, an owner name other than mine already entered! I was livid...they acknowledged their mistake and sent me a new one a week later.
Well, all week I have been testing it. With every lens I have it front focusses...no two ways about it. I'd say at least 80% of my test shots put the actual focus point at the very back and soft end of the focus plane. I sent test pix to the vendor and they agreed they were not good, but say I would have to send it to Canon.
Well, me being me, I just can't see paying 4K for something only to turn around and send it in for a repair, essentially, right upon receiving it...so I said I want one that works right as I paid for.
Now I know there may be some who think I am being unreasonable, but both my 20D and 350D nailed focus right out of the box, so I pretty much think the 1DMkIIN should.
So, I am going there tomorrow. A new camera is there and they are supposed to, so they say, confirm that the present camera is front focussing...if so they can take it back. I think they know I am not leaving without a refund check or a new camera.:D

Dan,,
Could you tell us the part info for the cover/latch from Canon? (part # and cost)
I have a few of the Black Diamonds that I won't use untill my Canon batts eventually die for good,. at which point I intend to swap the cells.
But I might be inclined to pick up a new cover/latch assembly or two from Canon.

$38 for the cap, and $0.25 per screw
i tried taking off the canon cap off the canon brand battery, and it works wonderfully with the black diamond battery

and if you use up one battery.....just take off the cap and stick it on a new Black Diamond

Why not just take the cap from the DC Coupler DC-E1? It's not like you need good fitment or weather sealing in the studio.

Maybe I have extraordinary generic batteries for my 1D, but mine feel as robust and fit as well as the Canon ones.......bought off EBAY for $15 USD and they give me about 550 shots per charge which is a lot more than the Canon-brand one gives me!! These are no-name Taiwanese batteries and they seem to do the trick!

Just a touch of silicone on the inside will take care of that.:)

I wish I could CDS but I honestly can't remember........bought them last summer when the Canon ones wouldn't hold more than 120 shots!! I just did a search on Ebay for NP-E3 batteries and picked a vendor that was here in Canada......Vancouver I think. I'll see if I can find a receipt or something........I'm happy with them since I can get about 500 shots with them! I'm pretty sure they are very close to the Black Diamond ones (2200mAh).

Interesting reading, since I'm about to finalise payment on a 1D ;)

Make sure you have at least 2-3 batteries........they drain quickly and the CCD sensor seems to use a lot more power than the upgraded 1 series bodies. This is one of the major drawbacks with the 1D but it is easily solved and without too much investment (as long as you stay with generic batteries!)
