I've read through all of the articles on this forum, but have not managed to find a solution to my problem....

I have just bought a Canon A70 after extensive research on the internet but am worried it is not working properly (I am several notches below amateur in the photograhic ability scale!!!). The flash goes off on every shot if enabled at all (e.g. on or automatic) regardless of light conditions i.e. taking a picture of a white car in direct sunlight at midday!!! I am aware I can control the flash using the manual mode but am not skilled enough to do this on every shot.... Is there a light sensor on the camera? If so is there any way I can check it is working?

Cheers

As far as my understanding goes, the 'auto' mode for flash will simply control the strength of the flash (you may have already discovered that in some modes you can manually adjust the strength of the flash. It has three settings - low, medium, high).

Thus for a shot with alot of light already, it will turn the flash down to the lowest output, but it will not turn it off completely. If you have plenty of light in your shot already, turn the flash off - you won't need it.

Cheers.

Turn your flash to Auto (lightening bolt and a little A)

If you're shooting in harsh sunlight, the flash may help ease the shadows. This is one place where the flash on (lightening bolt only) is handy.
