My new Sigma 100-300mm F/4...what a tank! Don't mind PhotoSuckit...It sucks, and changes your pic size, but hey.....I'm tired and its easy. :p
These were all from a vacation to Scottsdale...."celebrity baseball", Giants Spring training(block away), Vintage Phoenix racing...A month in heaven. Some are chopped obviously.
I needed "IS" on the helmet/bat/glove pic...damnit!
haha I previewed it...there are all sorts of sizes here, but you get the idea....this lens is a hell of a piece of glass for the $$$! Just got the Sigma APO 1.4x the other day, but haven't been able to fully test it(Crappy crappy crappy weather!)

I like the last one from an artistic standpoint, some of the others are interesting, but they seem like they are cut off a bit (mainly the 1st one)

Yeah....If I panned the pic to close to the back of the car...alot of time I will just make a big chop. I guess I didn't really notice until you said that. The ones that are like a 1/3 pan, IMO makes the car look faster....

I really like the fourth and 7th pic, the baseball shots are also good. personally i wouldnt even dare to complain about some of the pics being a bit cut off because otherwise they are exceptionally sharp and show great speed (which im not sure if i'd be able to capture). Mind sharing what kind of shutter speed and approach you took to take these? monopod? tripod? any pp? shooting technique? ect

Thanks...Its was my first time with such a heavy lens(Its like +2 1/2lbs heavier then my old lens), and it just takes practice....All car pics were shot hand-held, 1/125th sec at ~F/11-F/14 at 100iso. I always shoot 100 iso, I also hooked it up to an Elan 7 and used 50iso. Get your feet planted w/ legs apart and twist at the hip....After you practice awhile, it turns into a rythm...Generally you just get that AI going and it does good, when close to the track I will use manual. I have a nice monopod, but find it almost getting in the way when shooting cars and bikes(unless its head on shots or backshots). Not to much to it. The key is the magic 1/125sec and 100iso or lower(you want as little DOF as possible)....I've succeeded in a VERY few pics hand-held at 1/60th and 1/80th(they look crazy if you get it right)
I can't wait for the season to start!

Prefer to see all of the car or it looks like a failed pan. That lens has a horribly slow motor and you have done well to get what you have.

So the Sigma 100-300 F4 is not well suited to sports photography ?

Its not the quickest focus, but it gets the job done....As long as the AI is going, it seems to focus just fine....Looks like a pretty good motorsports lens to me. ;)

I'd echo Dave's comments. Nice sharp shots and the pans are well timed but the framing and composition let's many of these shots down.

Nice shots. Did you have to sign a waiver for the shot of Barry, or is that just for reporters? ;) Great colors. If racing is not good for anything else, it's great for colorful paint jobs!

It was kinda funny....I was almost as close to them as the "Pros", except I could sit down and relax while I was talking them. :D
