Just something a bit different . The rider in the first pic was un-injured and continued to race.

I am using a Canon 20D with a Canon 70-200 f2.8l USM lens. I also use a 580ex speedlite flash for fill.
I take lots of MX pics for some local magazines.

Love the first shot.... so question for you.... do you fill flash everything? Never really thought about it but It would help with the shadows... just wondering.

No not everything. Close up corners shots and start pics mostly. I find it helps quite a bit. It also depends on the sun and the cloud cover, but it definatly helps.

Great shot Freebs. Reminds me of last year when I broke my ribs in a puff of sand just like that one. Although my crash involved me eating the handle bars in the chest and falling from 20 feet in the air.:( Snows almost melted up here in Canada and Motorcross is around the corner. Whoohoo.

Do you find the 580 will work for fill flash across the entire range of your 70-200? I have the same lens and am wondering if a 580 would do the job...
Also, where is local? Can't quite place the foliage in the images. Love image #1 by the way.

Local is South Africa. The 580 is OK for fill flash up to 150mm. As i said before, I dont always use it.

This was round 1 of the SA National Championships. The guy in the first pic was a Canadian, Chuck Measley, who came over to race the first round. Unfortunatly never did too well.

I never thought of using a fill flash in good natural light shoots!
