My brand-new 10D arrived yesterday and two of the lenses came today (Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Sigma 24-70mm f/3.5-5.6)... I went to the marina to take some shots of the boats and to get a feel for the camera itself.

I would post some pictures, but these test shots aren't worth the bandwitdh really (hazy, foggy, crappy day in San Diego). My camera does not appear to exhibit the "focus problem" that has been addressed ad nauseum here and elsewhere, although I find that the images straight from the camera are soft and requires a little USM or Fred Miranda's IntelliSharpen.

I have the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L lens on order and the Zenitar 16mm Fisheye is coming sometime soon - although I will probably end up getting rid of the Zenitar now that I have the Canon L...

One more lens and I'm set: The Canon 100-400mm L lens.

The camera feels good and focuses well. I like the Sigma lens, but was a little apprehensive with people getting those Err 99 errors... my Sigma is sharp, pretty fast, and contrasty. It's work for now... I'll post some pics when I have something worth posting. I do have that Europe trip at the end of August, so something nice then for sure!

Thanks for all of your help on the lens advice, even if I didn't reply to your messages - I read and read and read and figure that for my important lenses (the wide and telephoto), I should swallow the pain and buy the Canon L lenses... no need to worry with those!

Hi Phuoc,

... quite some amount of money you spent on choice Canon products lately ... I'm happy with you!

Andy

Why? Do you work for Canon? :)

OK, some sample shots that I took today to get acquainted with my camera better:

Shot at 70mm (112mm effective), f 5.6, P-Mode, all focus points. Lens was a Sigma 24-70mm f/3.5-5.6 HF Aspherical.

Photoshop work: Sharpen (custom Unsharp Mask), Auto Color, cropped slightly, added frame. As you can see, no focus problems on this 10D.

Same settings as above, although not cropped as much.

What I've notice, the 10D is a heavy, big boy. It feels pretty good for being so big. Wearing it around my neck really emphasized this. My 35mm film camera (Minolta) wasn't nearly as heavy.

This Sigma lens performed more than adequately, so I'm happy and can really recommend this one.

Great shots. The 10D does seem heavy and large at first coming from a 'standard' SLR. However, once you use it for awhile, if you pick that Minolta again, it will feel like a toy.

On the giraffe shot, you can see a reflection on a drop of saliva on one of its whiskers. That's what that little white spot is below the chin. :)

phuocle,

Nice shots especially for the first time out. You will get used to it, it is really an OUTSTANDING camera.

NiL,

RFMSports,

Since I consider you the expert on 100-400 L lens, can you tell me why after using it today, I got so much noise in all my photos. ISO was low, 100 or 200.

Did you experience any noise when you first used the lens?

NiL,

Like you I got my 10D last week and so far it seem to be doing well. Infact I am thrilled. I wish my Visa Card felt the same way.
Next week I will take my 2 grand children to Toronto for a trip to Canad'as Wonderland and Lion King, and give a good work out to the 10D.
How many batteries I should take?. I have a 1 gig and 512 card.

phuocle,

Please let us/me know how the Zenitar works when you get it. I have ordered one as well and expect it in the next week or so. Let us know if you have any clearance problems with the mirror due to the eos adaptor. That is my main concern.

Thanks, Dale

I'll post some pictures as soon as I get the lens. I bought that lens first after reading Rdenney's post on it, but only a few days later decided that I should probably just bite the bullet and get the Canon 16-35 L lens.

Most likely I will end up selling the Zenitar though. But before I do, I'll check it out and see how it performs.

There is a clearance problem with the mirror? ? ? ?

I also bid on one on Ebay - looks like a fun lens just for kicks and giggles.

I tried out a Canon 17-whatever yesterday and was not thrilled. I really do need a wider lens for the 10D than a 17mm.

RedShoes Girl:

So, does that mean no pictures or do you have to go mirror lock up to get anything? That stinks. Thought it would be a fun way to go really wide!!

I think there's some confusion here... there are two versions of the Zenitar lens in question, according to my understanding.

One requires the EOS mount adapter and the other is built with an EOS mount.

I believe dal451 was talking about the former, which may very well have some problems. I bought the latter and most of the ones I saw on eBay are also of the latter variety (with the EOS mount built in).

Does that clear things up?

I love using the Canon EOS 10D ^_^ I just got it in May. I was previously using the Canon EOS A2e. I havent really had any problems except for some odd reason a few weeks ago the button to pop up the flash doesnt work. So I guess I have to send my cam on a vacation to get it fixed. I mostly use these 3 lenses...
28-105mm ef
100-300mm ef
100mm macro
I also use an EF25 extension tube on my 100-300 lens for taking pictures of dragonflies.
I mostly take pics of flora and fauna
