View Full Version : 2000th Post - Proper Job!
Balliolman
10th of March 2006 (Fri), 17:14
This is my 2000th post and I celebrate it by posting a shot of a boat with the appropriate Cornish phrase for something satisfying "Proper Job!" I hope you like it. :)
This is a crossed stereogram. The left eye looks at the right image. The right eye looks at the left image. Do not strain. Do not go bug-eyed. Relax. A central image will appear giving stereo depth. :D

Don't feel bad, mine don't either. No matter how much eye-crossing I do, I can't get "relaxed" enough to make it work. Plus, I see 3 images when I cross my eyes, not one as it's apparently supposed to appear as. Also, no one ever says how far you're supposed to be from the monitor, so I waste half my time trying to figure that out as well. haha

JT, JT, JT, please keep trying: what you are seeing is correct! :) The middle image of the three is the stereo depth one. When you see it cover the left and right images by bringing your hands in front of your eyes (keep them crossed) if you want to.
Look at this link and see how well you are doing but only read the part about X or crossed stereos:

Dear boy,you are catching up with me i think.
Well Balliolman, deffenetly your ability to capture the 3d effect has much improved since the first time i ever saw a 3d of yours.;)
The depth of the images are turning out to be awesome.
However,i have something small to complaint about.:(
Its not you but the prosses of compression IMHO.
The green on the boat seems pixelised on my monitor, and also there are artifacts on the letters and the edge of the house where it meets the sky.
Is it my monitor or you can see them too?
I usually don`t get that kind of stuff on your images.
One great thing though is that the pictures are bigger this time and look great on my monitor.

Well observed, Dimitri! The pixellation you point out I noticed too. Firstly there is a bit of JPEG compression from a whopping PNG master file but actually not as much as it appears to be. I looked at the original file and the green paint on the bottom of the keel in reality was patchy and peeling -- compression has exaggerated that. The lettering is similarly crudely done. As for the edge of the house I shall have to look at that but crunching this image down to 80kb is tantamount to butchery!!;)
If you look at this image in my flickr gallery it has better resolution.
Thanks for your stimulating response, Dimitri!:)

I really, really think you would enjoy stereo: especially given your talent for landscape photography! :D Thanks Balliolman. I've looked at the links, and bookmarked them for further attempts. I can get to the stage where the photos are blurry, and the central image starts to form, but at this point, I'm losing it as I dare say my brain wants to focus on this, and the eyeball squint is lost. I'll keep trying though as it is frustrating to see (or not see!) your new posts and all the complements, and not be able to appreciate them for myself. Thanks also for the landscape photography compliment. :D

Whoa...just tried it again. I got to the point where my eyes were completely relaxed and I was able to sit back in my chair and analyze ever aspect of the picture! I even moved my cursor around over it, which looked a little funny.
This appears to be one of those things that you have to get a feeling for...like riding a bike. Once you figure out what the correct feeling is, you can do it. I'm getting the hang of it! :D

YEAH! :D Here's a tip, JT, do not move the cursor around because you are introducing an element in one side which will not be in the other. This will cause retinal rivalry which in turn leads to viewing discomfort!
Retinal rivalry can even cause severe headaches. If you look at my stereos you will find details in each chip (picture) except at the sides which is actually optically correct and as we naturally view the world.
You know you are an expert freeviewer, JT, when you can view my stereos in the flickr slideshow and each shot is instantaneously fused into depth! Something to aim for, maybe?
But of course, the ulitimate thing to do, Buddy, is to take your own stereos. PM me if you need help with that.

That looks like decent little viewer, Sandy! It would help you to view parallel stereos (not the X stereos I post to POTN). The best modern device of this ilk, that I know of and use is the Pokescope. A simple Google search will find info on that. I highly recommend it.
The stereos I offer are done by cha-cha. One shot, sidestep, second shot. The shots or chips are then aligned in a program called Stereo Photo Maker, a free download. It is excellent software. There is another even more versatile free download called Anabuilder which is almost photoshop like in its capabilites. Setting the stereo window in SPM will naturally crop shots, additionally manual cropping will be needed. There is no need for spacing of the chips, though many are and the distance or septum can be manually set. The frames are an extra which can enhance a shot and, in my opinion, they make fusing of the stereo easier as they clearly define the borders of the image.
If you need further info or have more questions, Sandy, feel free to pm me. :D

Thanks for looking again, Ahmad, and thanks for your original response. I was waiting for you to be online to reply as I like the aspect of immediate dialogue.:)
I have looked at the foreground objects and do not see any unusual difference. The left right differences are as they should be. The vertical alignment is spot-on: sometimes there can be the tiniest difference vertically because the software cannot be any more precise at the pixel movement. That does not seem to apply in this case.:D I should emphasise this was a stereo taken by handheld cha-cha and this will always create misalignments to correct, horizontal, vertical and rotational. So in brief, in my opinion this stereo passes quality control and, believe me, I am picky about my work!!

Khoda hafez,
Thank you very much. Surely your work is always a QC measure, not only passes.
what I wantedto say is that in the your newer shots I notice less horl. movement than it was in the early shots, as if it only to match the distance between the human eye and not going to the 30 cm or 1 foot described in one of your posts.
Best Regards

Yes, I understand now, you mean the stereobase. This will vary according to the shot. The most natural stereobase is 65mm the average distance between human pupils. This has to be less or increased according to how near the closest object photographed, and to be retained in the final stereo, is.
I have seen stereos taken with a stereobase of millimetres and literally hundreds of metres. They usually conform to the 1/30th rule which means if your subject is, for example, 30 cm away the stereobase should be 1 cm.
But this rule, Ahmad, is a very general guide and can often be 'broken' and the results pleasing to view! :D When doing cha-cha that is a blessing, I can tell you!!
Best wishes,

Nice stereo, I'm reading this only two days after it's original posting and you're total is already up to 2100 i.e. an average of 50 posts a day. Your obviously a veracious poster and I don't think your 3000th posting is far off.
Thanks, Mick, I have had weekend to myself consequently not had to bother with much else -- which makes a nice change. What do you think of my other stereos? :-)

'tiz a proper job indeed. Look forrad to more stereo's dreckly.
(Translation for thouse outside Cornwall: It really is a great shot. I look forward to seeng more in the (probably not too distant) future.)
Thanks for sharing. I know I don't comment as much as I used to (or would like to) at the moment but I always enjoy seeing youe stereo posts. When life settles down I must see if we can meet up to shoot some stereos and you can show me exactly how you get such good results.
Congrats on the 2000(+) and thanks for sharing.
This is my 2000th post and I celebrate it by posting a shot of a boat with the appropriate Cornish phrase for something satisfying "Proper Job!" I hope you like it. :)

Not yet. I forgot all about the cha-cha's, too. I was out over the last two days taking pictures and I completely forgot about it. Next time I'll try to remember. :)

FINALLY I got it to work!
I needed to be about 6' away from my monitor for my eyes to relax. Took a good 10 mintues.
AWESOME!

Well done, indeed, Nick! I am really pleased for you.:) With practice you will be able to sit closer to your monitor and freeview for as long as you want without a hint of strain.
It's great when a stereo first pops -- a new beginning in your photography don't you think? :D
If you look at my other stereo posts, or my gallery, please leave comments!
Thanks for telling me of your success!
